Cushing had 10 tackles, a sack and an interception during the game. Defensive coordinator Richard Smith said, "He just keeps getting better and better and better. Megan Manfull, of the Houston Chronicle, reports Houston Texans defensive coordinator Richard Smith is not happy with the lack of production from the team's defensive line on passing downs this preseason, especially in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 18, against the Arizona Cardinals. "I'm happy we won the game, but once again, I'm not totally excited about the way we performed. There wasn't enough pressure on the quarterback. We have to go back and look at it, and evaluate it. The run defense I'm pleased with. I'm not pleased in terms of our pass defense. And it comes from a combination of things: pressure on the quarterback and doing a good job of our coverage," Smith said. In the game against the Cardinals, the starters on the defensive line totaled only one tackle and one pass defensed.

Smith said, "We feel it's going to fit our personnel extremely well here. Also, we have the ability to be able to run some 3-4, which we will install. We think that's an advantage because this football team has been running the 3-4 for quite a long time here. Because of that, we feel it's harder for an offense to prepare for us. So right now we're building our library."

Alex Marvez, of the Sun-Sentinel, reports Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Richard Smith may be headed to the Houston Texans. The Houston Chronicle reported that Smith is expected to become the Texans' co-defensive coordinator with Arizona Cardinals assistant coach Frank Bush on new head coach Gary Kubiak's staff. Smith and assistant head coach of defense Will Muschamp essentially served as the Dolphins' co-coordinators in 2005.
