The 6-6 Seawright now weighs about 340 pounds, 15 pounds heavier than last season because of too many "tacos," he said, and needs to shed about five to 10 to get back to the weight where the coaching staff wants him. "If he could just control (his weight) a little bit, we would probably see his endurance increase," Coughlin said.

Vinny DiTrani, of the Bergen Record, reports there is a battle brewing at nose tackle for the New York Giants. Rookie DT Barry Cofield is expected to vie with veteran DT Damane Duckett and DT Jonas Seawright for the starting job, even though nose tackle was not his main position in college. Cofield played very little nose tackle in college, spending most of his time as an end in a 3-4 setup. That translates more to the "three" or "off" tackle position in the 4-3. Cofield said Giants coaches have compared him favorably to DT Kendrick Clancy, last year's starter on the nose who fled to Arizona. "I don't want to just be a nose tackle who takes up blockers," Cofield said.

He begins the path to that goal next week when the team opens training camp. University of North Carolina defensive line coach Barry Lawing said the key to Seawright's development was his improved handwork, which helped him better utilize his natural strength for leverage. Seawright's most impressive quality, according to Lawing, is his solid character and commitment to teamwork. Playing for a renowned disciplinarian like head coach Tom Coughlin, Lawing does not see Seawright having any problems fitting in with Coughlin's system.

Inside the League reports one scout who spent last week watching workouts at the Las Vegas All-American Classic said he saw only four to five players worth drafting at the game, with the most impressive two being Arkansas RB Decori Birmingham (on offense) and North Carolina DT Jonas Seawright on defense. The same scout counted off 28 players on LVAAC rosters (about a third of the 97 players on rosters) who he thought weren't even good enough to be in a camp this summer.
