Smith is used out of the shotgun formation, instead continuing to rely on a run-first philosophy. "One of the worst things we could do right now is to put Alex D. Smith in shotgun and say, 'OK, let's go get it, guys,' and let him throw 40, 50 times a game," Singletary said. "Alex is throwing as well as any quarterback in the league right now. He is as accurate as any quarterback in the league. The smartest thing for us to do is not to take all of training camp and just throw it out and say, 'We're going to go to the shotgun.'"

I know he wants to be here and ... if he's not here, he's going to be working his tail off. The No. 1 thing is I know he wants to be here."
Wed, 15 Jul 2009 08:33:44 -0700 John Crumpacker, of the San Francisco Chronicle, reports San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary said the quarterback competition will not be the biggest issue facing the team this summer. "Too many times, people make an issue of the quarterback position when there are more important things that must happen," Singletary said. "Whether Shaun is the quarterback or Alex is the quarterback, our offensive line has to get better, the receivers have to get better and the coaches have to get better. All those things have to get better. We have to get to that place in a hurry."

"I think a lot of people, starting with the Vernon Davis incident, really feel that I am a yeller and a screamer and an intimidator," Singletary said. "I think if you ask my guys, I don't think you would get that. I think the No. 1 thing that I am about is relationships. I am all about relationships. You can scream, you can yell, you can be a nice guy, you can do all those things. You can have all types of styles. But if you don't have a relationship with those players, it doesn't matter. It's not going to work."
Wed, 17 Jun 2009 08:01:51 -0700 Matthew Barrows, of the Sacramento Bee, reports San Francisco 49ers QB Alex D. Smith has been throwing the ball well in offseason workouts and is gaining confidence in his abilities. As a result, there appears to be a legitimate quarterback competition between Smith and QB Shaun Hill. "Well, I think the playing field is level now," head coach Mike Singletary said of the competition. "I think before the offseason began, I wasn't really sure where Alex was. You know, he's been through a lot in four years. I think in order for he and Shaun to compete on level ground, he had to get healthy, he had to get his mind focused, I think he had to let go of some of the bitterness that happened to him, some of the bad things, and get the bad taste out of his mouth and be ready to go. I think that has happened." Singletary, however, did reiterate that if the season were to begin tomorrow, Hill would be the starter.

Coach and I have sat down. We sat down and talked last week. We had an off-week of OTAs and we discussed about Michael Vick and we're not going to go that route. We will not do it."
Mon, 08 Jun 2009 07:45:35 -0700 Tim Kawakami, of the Mercury News, reports San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary said he is trying to bring the team up to speed and establish an identity. Singletary added the team must work harder at establishing an identity. "The thing that I'm explaining to them right now is we're behind right now," Singletary said. "The great teams in the league, they know who they are....They know who the quarterback is. They know who the receivers are. They know it. We don't. So we've got to work just a little bit harder. We've got to push just a little bit more. And, yes, the bar's going to be set high. I don't want to go out there and go through the motions, ever. We go out there on the field, we're going to execute and we're going to get better. Or else."
