Atlanta Falcons LB Akeem Dent almost certainly will be a two-down defender in the scheme being implemented by new defensive coordinator Mike Nolan. Dent has been thrust into a starting role, with 13-year LB Mike Peterson as his backup, following the injury to LB Lofa Tatupu (pectoral).

The chances for LB Akeem Dent to start in Week 1 as the middle linebacker increased dramatically when LB Lofa Tatupu (pectoral) suffered an injury lifting weights. Tatupu will meet with a specialist, and it's uncertain how much time he'll miss just yet. However, he is likely to miss the start of training camp at the least.

Atlanta Falcons LB Lofa Tatupu (pectoral) suffered a pectoral injury while working out, according to head coach Mike Smith. "Lofa sustained a pectoral injury while working out," Smith said. "At this point, we do not know the extent of the injury, but we expect to have more information early next week." The Falcons open training camp Thursday, July 26.

Atlanta Falcons LB Akeem Dent said he has been watching film with LB Lofa Tatupu this offseason and that Tatupu has been helping understand things even though the two are expected to compete for the middle linebacker job during training camp. "We're learning together, watching film, making corrections," Dent said. "He's helping me out a lot in terms of trying to understand everything. A guy like Lofa, that has been to the Pro Bowl and an All-Pro player, it's been great for me. I'm a competitor. I know he's a competitor also, but at the end of the day it's good for the Falcons to have two guys that will be ready to play at any point."

Atlanta Falcons LB Lofa Tatupu said he did not play last season because he could not find a team to sign him and it had nothing to do with his previous injuries.
