Tue, 19 Mar 2002 18:28:23 -0800 The Star Tribune reports free agent TE Ken Dilger (Colts) is expected to visit the Minnesota Vikings this week. There have been some concerns of Dilger's knee, but the Vikings are confident he is healthy and could enhance a TE group that already includes Jim Kleinsasser and Johnny McWilliams. The team remains interested in re-signing TE Byron Chamberlain. After Chamberlain visited with Detroit, the Vikings too their $1.6 million-per-year offer off the table. Team officials said they have reallocated the money initially targeted for Chamberlain and any forthcoming offer will be lower than their original one.

They placed RB Walter Williams on the injured reserve list.

The leading candidates, Johnny McWilliams and Rod Rutledge each have two catches in the pre-season, while Jermaine Wiggins, who has been running with the first team, has just one.

Rutledge reported in great shape, about 15 pounds lighter than last season, and he does look quicker. Three other candidates for the job, Johnny McWilliams (hamstring) and rookies Jabari Holloway (hamstring) and Arther Love (groin) remain sidelined with injuries. Chris Eitzmann, another candidate, caught the wrath of the coaches for dropping a pass when he was wide-open.

Jermaine Wiggins was able to make an impression during mini-camp and goes in as the favorite to win the starting job. However, Wiggins will have to prove to coach Bill Belichick that he can become a full time player. Belichick said the job is wide open and five players will be vying for the starting TE spot including Rod Rutledge, Johnny McWilliams, Jabari Holloway, Arther Love and Wiggins.

TEs Jermaine Wiggins, who looked impressive at the end of the 2000 season, will battle with Jabari Holloway, Johnny McWilliams and Rod Rutledge. The team appears to view rookie Arther Love as a project and Chris Eitzmann has an uphill battle in front of him just to make the roster. QBs enjoyed throwing to Holloway during camps this year while McWilliams did little to impress during summer workouts.
