The Star Tribune reports free agent TE Ken Dilger (Colts) is expected to visit the Minnesota Vikings this week. There have been some concerns of Dilger's knee, but the Vikings are confident he is healthy and could enhance a TE group that already includes Jim Kleinsasser and Johnny McWilliams. The team remains interested in re-signing TE Byron Chamberlain. After Chamberlain visited with Detroit, the Vikings too their $1.6 million-per-year offer off the table. Team officials said they have reallocated the money initially targeted for Chamberlain and any forthcoming offer will be lower than their original one.

Sun, 29 Jul 2001 07:47:57 -0700

The Boston Globe reports the battle to start at TE for the New England Patriots is close between Jermaine Wiggins, who has been catching everything in sight and Rod Rutledge, whose goal is to shed his "good block, no catch" image. Rutledge reported in great shape, about 15 pounds lighter than last season, and he does look quicker. Three other candidates for the job, Johnny McWilliams (hamstring) and rookies Jabari Holloway (hamstring) and Arther Love (groin) remain sidelined with injuries. Chris Eitzmann, another candidate, caught the wrath of the coaches for dropping a pass when he was wide-open.

Sun, 24 Jun 2001 09:41:17 -0700

According to the Boston Herald, the New England Patriots have a battle for the starting tight end position ready to kick off at the start of training camp. TEs Jermaine Wiggins, who looked impressive at the end of the 2000 season, will battle with Jabari Holloway, Johnny McWilliams and Rod Rutledge. The team appears to view rookie Arther Love as a project and Chris Eitzmann has an uphill battle in front of him just to make the roster. QBs enjoyed throwing to Holloway during camps this year while McWilliams did little to impress during summer workouts.
