Bill Williamson, of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, reports tight end was one of the Minnesota Vikings' strengths last season as TEs Hunter Goodwin and Jim Kleinsasser emerged in the double-tight end set, when pass-catching specialist TE Byron Chamberlain missed time. The same scenario is in place for the first four games of the 2003 season. Goodwin again will join Kleinsasser in the starting lineup while Chamberlain serves an NFL-mandated suspension for testing positive for ephedra.

Vikings coach Mike Tice said the team values Goodwin, but he is No. 3 behind starters Jim Kleinsasser and Byron Chamberlain. "We have two tight ends in front of him,'' Tice said. "We love Hunter and he's a big part of what we do. But he's No. 3 here. If another team wants him as No. 2, he may have to make a decision."

The Houston Chronicle reports the Houston Texans will have visits with free agent LB Kailee Wong (Vikings) and TE Hunter Goodwin (Dolphins) this week. The Texans are also interested in free agent OLB Warrick Holdman (Bears). As previously reported the team will visit with free agent QB Rob Johnson (Bills) and G Steve McKinney (Colts) and they remain interested in free agent OL Mike Wahle (Packers). Johnson has moved to the top of the Texans list of veteran free agent QBs because of his age, size, experience, above-average arm strength and exceptional mobility.

As an update to previous reports, the Miami Herald reports the Miami Dolphins are expected to release RB J.J. Johnson, TE Hunter Goodwin, WR O.J. McDuffie, S Shawn Wooden and possibly S Brock Marion. Marion's release appears to depend on whether or not he'll agree to restructure his contract between now and March 1, which is when he's due a $2 million roster bonus. By releasing those players, the Dolphins would save about $11 million against the salary cap this year.

Alex Marvez reports for the Sun Sentinel the Miami Dolphins may possibly expose DT Tim Bowens in the upcoming NFL expansion draft. The Dolphins must submit their list to the NFL by Tuesday; the draft is February 18. The team wants to hang on to Bowens, so they would hope the Houston Texans see him as too expensive. He is slated to make $8 million in 2002. One Dolphin confirmed in the expansion draft is RB J.J. Johnson. Other strong contenders for the expansion list are: TE Hunter Goodwin, G Heath Irwin, LB Scott Galyon and S Brock Marion.

Alex Marvez reports for the Sun Sentinel the Miami Dolphins have five players due roster bonuses in early March: FS Brock Marion ($2 million), DT Tim Bowens ($1 million), TE Hunter Goodwin ($550,000), S Shawn Wooden ($150,000) and LB Scott Galyon ($100,000). Due to the high base salaries for Bowens ($7 million) and Marion ($2 million) next season, the Dolphins likely will ask both players to restructure their contracts or get released. Goodwin, Wooden and Galyon may be released or they could be exposed in next month's expansion draft for the Houston Texans.

Dolphins | Injury News Gets Worse

Jason Cole reports for the Miami Herald the injury news on rookie LB Morlon Greenwood became worse today as he is now expected to miss six weeks of action. Greenwood suffered a severe sprain on the middle of his left foot during practice July 28. TE Hunter Goodwin (sore knee) and OL Todd Wade (sprained ankle) and Mark Dixon (sore back) are also not expected to play Monday night in the Dolphins pre-season opener with the Rams. With Greenwood out, Twan Russell and Scott Galyon are expected to compete for the starting job at OLB.
