Tom Rock, of Newsday, reports New York Giants secondary coach Peter Giunta said he was not allowed to interview for defensive coordinator jobs with other teams because the Giants would not grant permission.

Michael Eisen, of Giants.com, reports New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said he expects the defensive coaching staff to remain despite the hiring of new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. "I think we have an outstanding group of coaches," Coughlin said. "Steve is familiar with a number of them and I think that one thing that was a huge plus is I have a great sense that he will work very well with our current coaches and that the transition for him will be smooth." That staff includes Mike Waufle (defensive line), Bill Sheridan (linebackers), Peter Giunta (secondary/corners) and David Merritt (secondary/safeties).

The New York Giants have announced the team has hired Kansas City Chiefs defensive backs coach Peter Giunta as their new secondary coach.

Adam Teicher, of the Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs head coach Dick Vermeil said he will not make any changes to his defensive coaching staff. He was encouraged by team president and general manager Carl Peterson to make some moves, particularly at defensive back, as Peter Giunta and Vernon Dean coached the team's secondary which allowed more passing yards than any other in the league. While Vermeil said his assistants are all welcomed to return, he also expects better results from them in 2005.
