Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan said TE Byron Chamberlain came into training camp around 240 pounds. Shanahan noted that Chamberlain is in the best shape he's ever been in, so they're looking for some "good things" out of him this year provided he doesn't suffer any setbacks and keeps progressing.

Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan spoke highly of TE Byron Chamberlain, who returned to the Broncos over the offseason after spending the last few years elsewhere. "I've always liked Byron Chamberlain. I've liked the way he's played. He's a very smart individual. He was always a gamer that would make a big play at the right time," Shanahan said. He did note that Chamberlain's weight is an issue to watch and the team has told him they'd like his weight under 250 pounds; Chamberlain, in turn, guaranteed that he'd do what it took to be at that level.

Mark Zuckerman, of the Washington Times, reports Washington Redskins TE Byron Chamberlain, who was signed two weeks ago off waivers from the Minnesota Vikings, has been a big disappointment so far. Chamberlain was made inactive in Week 9 in favor of TE Zeron Flemister, who started the game. TE Kevin Ware was signed off the practice squad to backup Flemister.

Chamberlain was signed last Monday and wound up seeing the bulk of the playing time Sunday, Oct. 12, against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, finishing with three catches for 23 yards.

Updating previous reports, Mark Maske, of the Washington Post, reports Washington Redskins TE Robert Royal (leg) may have fractured his right femur during Sunday's, Oct. 12, game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and could be out for the season. Royal is scheduled to undergo tests on Monday, Oct. 13. Head coach Steve Spurrier said he is prepared to start recently-acquired TE Byron Chamberlain in his place.

Mark Zuckerman, of the Washington Times, reports Washington Redskins TE Byron Chamberlain will see some action in the Sunday, Oct. 12, game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in two tight-end sets, but the bulk of the playing time will go to starting TE Robert Royal. Chamberlain was signed Monday, Oct. 6, after being released by the Minnesota Vikings, and he's spent the last week trying to learn the Redskins' playbook in an effort to get ready by Sunday.

Updating previous reports, Mark Maske, of the Washington Post, reports the Washington Redskins plan to complete a contract agreement with TE Byron Chamberlain on Monday, Oct. 6. The team believes Chamberlain, who worked out for them on Friday, Oct. 3, will be a major upgrade over their current tight ends Zeron Flemister and Robert Royal. The Minnesota Vikings released him after reporting back to the team twenty pounds overweight.

Updating previous reports, Len Pasquarelli for ESPN.com reports league sources have confirmed Minnesota Vikings TE Byron Chamberlain has all but been cleared to return to the team on Monday, Sept. 29, following his four-game suspension. Head coach Mike Tice will make Chamberlain work hard to reclaim a position on the team, although releasing him outright might not be a realistic option because he brings talents to the team that no other TE does.

Sean Jensen, of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, reports Minnesota Vikings TE Byron Chamberlain is set to return to the team in 10 days after serving a four-game suspension for using a banned substance, but Chamberlain could be released if he returns to the team overweight. "Before we bring him back, we'll bring him in like any free agent," Vikings head coach Mike Tice said. "Because he was on suspension, we don't necessarily have to bring him back. We have options. If he's in good shape, there will be no problem. If he's not in good shape, there will be a problem."

Sean Jensen, of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, reports Minnesota Vikings TE Byron Chamberlain said he is disappointed with being suspended for four games after testing positive for ephedra. "I thought I was taking something that was ephedra-free," he said. "I should have read it closer." Chamberlain has been working out in Phoenix with other NFL players in hopes of regaining his Pro Bowl form of 2001. He will not be paid for the games he misses.

According to sources, Chamberlain tested positive for Ephedra. The sources said that Chamberlain was using a product he believed to be Ephedra-free, but misread the label.

Bill Williamson reports for the Pioneer Press the Oakland Raiders will visit with free agent TE Hunter Goodwin (Vikings) this week. Vikings coach Mike Tice said the team values Goodwin, but he is No. 3 behind starters Jim Kleinsasser and Byron Chamberlain. "We have two tight ends in front of him,'' Tice said. "We love Hunter and he's a big part of what we do. But he's No. 3 here. If another team wants him as No. 2, he may have to make a decision."

The Pioneer Press reports Minnesota Vikings TE Byron Chamberlain was hit hard by New Orleans Saints LB Sedrick Hodge late in the game and actually blacked out. “I couldn’t see anything,” Chamberlain said. But after the team took a timeout, and Chamberlain regained his vision, he came up with a huge reception that gave the Vikings a first down inside the Saints 10-yard line with 49 seconds remaining.
