Mon, 21 May 2012 05:23:25 -0700 New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan told his defensive players to come in to camp lighter and faster. The team lost speed in their pass rush and their overall defense last season.
Sat, 05 May 2012 06:31:34 -0700 New York Jets DL Quinton Coples said he felt like he already knew most of what he would need to know about the team's defensive playbook. "The defensive scheme, the majority of it is based off of what we got today," Coples said, "so I grasped the majority of the defensive playbook today." Head coach Rex Ryan laughed, however, when he was told that Coples thinks he has the playbook down. "We love the fact that he thinks he has it down. This is one practice and he has like four defenses in and our library is a little more extensive than that," Ryan said. "And the great thing is we will hold him to it now. So in the meeting that will be our first question, we will come up with something for him."
Wed, 02 May 2012 06:07:09 -0700 New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said he's pleased with the fact that the players showed up to the team's offseason program already in good condition. He said the Jets will be focused on team speed more than ever. "What you always do to differentiate between a good play and a great play is (speed)," Ryan said.
Wed, 02 May 2012 05:29:14 -0700 New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said the team was not planning to use their first-round pick in the NFL Draft on West Virginia LB Bruce Irvin, who went to the Seattle Seahawks, and hinted that they wouldn't have used their second-round pick on him, either. "Not at 16, I can tell you that much," Ryan said, when asked if the Jets were planning to select Irvin. "He was a guy we certainly did a lot of stuff on. We liked Bruce Irvin as a player, but not ahead of the first two guys we took."
Wed, 02 May 2012 04:25:27 -0700 New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said QB Tim Tebow has looked "outstanding" in limited drills during offseason workouts. "Same thing with Mark (Sanchez)," Ryan said Tuesday, May 1, quickly including his starting quarterback in the conversation. "Both those guys are in phenomenal shape." Ryan laughed when asked what he's seen from Tebow. "I saw enough of Tebow last year, to be honest with you," Ryan said, referring to the Jets' crushing loss to the Denver Broncos last season - a game than ended on Tebow's 95-yard touchdown drive. "I still see that last drive."
Mon, 16 Apr 2012 10:08:08 -0700 New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan expressed confidence at the start of the team's offseason program Monday, April 16, that the team is going to be something special. "I know we're going to build a great team," Ryan said.
Wed, 04 Apr 2012 10:12:29 -0700 New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said the offense will emphasize the running game in 2012.
Thu, 22 Mar 2012 06:48:40 -0700 New York Jets QB Tim Tebow said that he loved watching head coach Rex Ryan in HBO's Hard Knocks and is looking forward to the experience of playing for him. "I wanted to play for Coach Ryan ever since I saw Hard Knocks," Tebow said. "He just seemed like a coach who loves football and is passionate about the game of football. He's definitely a players' coach. I just love that about him."
Tue, 14 Feb 2012 06:07:37 -0800 New York Giants RB Brandon Jacobs said he would not rule out signing with the New York Jets if he is released in the offseason. Jacobs said he has no issues with head coach Rex Ryan. "I like the way Rex handles his business," Jacobs said. "The guys on that team I know, know how I feel."
Sun, 05 Feb 2012 13:06:54 -0800 New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said he will become more involved with the defense next season. Ryan may take over the defensive play calling next season.
Wed, 18 Jan 2012 07:32:30 -0800 Of the 11 men who started NFL head-coaching tenures in 2009, just two remain gainfully employed by the same team: New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan and Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz.
Tue, 03 Jan 2012 15:46:49 -0800 New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said he will be more involved in the offensive play calling next season, even if offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer is retained. "I will definitely be around the offense more, there's no doubt, for no other reason just so I have a better idea of our team," Ryan said. Ryan stated that Schottenheimer will return as the OC unless he gets a head coaching gig with another team.
Tue, 03 Jan 2012 05:10:42 -0800 New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said Monday, Jan. 2, he made a mistake by naming six captains before the season because he believes it detracted from the team concept. He said there will be no captains in the future. "It's not a reflection of anybody in particular, but we're not going to have those anymore," Ryan said.
Tue, 03 Jan 2012 05:05:05 -0800 New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan admitted Monday, Jan. 2, that he didnt have the pulse of the team this season. "Normally, I'm a guy that really has the pulse of this team, and I don't think I had the pulse of the team the way I've done in the past," Ryan said. "When I met with players, I think that became clear to me." Ryan became so emotional in a team meeting that he cried while addressing the importance of unity, according to players.
Thu, 29 Dec 2011 06:37:32 -0800 New York Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, from all indications, needs a Hail Mary to save his job. The heir apparent is offensive line coach Bill Callahan; however, Callahan's contract is up after the season, according to a league source, and he could be an attractive coordinator candidate on the open market, especially if Jon Gruden decides to return to the sideline. There also seems to be a disconnect between Schottenheimer and head coach Rex Ryan.
Thu, 29 Dec 2011 06:17:11 -0800 New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said that blame needs to be placed solely on him, and not on QB Mark Sanchez or offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, for the team's struggles this season. "I know Brian takes a ton of the heat, he's taken heat. Sanchez has taken heat," Ryan said. "I'm taking heat, that's fine. It should be on me. It shouldn't be on coaches, players or whatever. I'm the guy that said we were the better team and we weren't that day, so that should fall on me, the criticism should be on me. And trust me, I know a bunch of it is, and rightfully so."
Tue, 27 Dec 2011 06:04:31 -0800 New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said the team will not pursue Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning in the offseason if he is available. Ryan expressed his confidence in QB Mark Sanchez. "There's no way that we're looking to replace Mark Sanchez," Ryan said. "If they were both out there and you were starting a draft, I would take … Would you take Peyton Manning? Yeah, I'd take Peyton Manning over anybody. I'm not saying that … I'm not telling that lie. Of course, I would take him. But right now, when you're looking at our football team and our franchise, obviously we feel great about our quarterback situation. Is he going to get better, he absolutely is. Is he perfect? Not by any stretch of the imagination right now ... But we think he has the ability to be special."
Mon, 26 Dec 2011 08:24:22 -0800 There have been rumblings about Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning's possible interest in playing for the New York Jets. Manning's future with the Colts remains uncertain at this point. Jets head coach Rex Ryan has said in the past that he views Manning as the NFL's best quarterback, bar none.
Mon, 26 Dec 2011 06:48:28 -0800 New York Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer could be coaching for his job in Week 17. The Jets rank 27th in the NFL in total offense and looked like a complete mess in Week 16. They attempted 68 passes and just 25 rushes. Schottenheimer's contract runs through 2013, but if the Jets are looking for someone to pay should they miss the playoffs, he would be the most likely candidate. Head coach Rex Ryan is not going anywhere and they are not giving up on QB Mark Sanchez.
Thu, 22 Dec 2011 07:10:18 -0800 Former New York Giants DL Michael Strahan said New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan's act of talking too much is becoming old. According to Strahan, Ryan is on the verge of becoming a joke in his own locker room. "It's a fine line whenever you have to talk that much," Strahan said. "Once it kind of seems like a joke, it becomes a joke to your own players." Strahan added, "If I have to walk into a room and tell you how bad I am, I'm probably not that bad. If I'm comfortable in my own skin, I shouldn't have to convince people of my words. That's the whole thing with Rex I look at. At some point, you just look and go 'enough is enough.'"
Tue, 20 Dec 2011 07:34:35 -0800 New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said his team is better than the New York Giants and the "big brother" of New York-area football. "Certainly, we were the better team the first two years," Ryan said. "We made the playoffs and went to the (AFC) Championship game. To say a team's better than you that never made the playoffs is ridiculous ... We get to prove it Saturday who the best team is this year."
Tue, 06 Dec 2011 07:06:00 -0800 New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan decided to fiddle with the offense prior to Week 13 and suggested to offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer that the team go more often with the wildcat formation. It was a strategy that succeeded on a modest scale, after requiring a considerable amount of preparation. "We're always ready for any suggestions he's ready to make," WR Santonio Holmes said of Ryan. "At this point, you go with the flow of the game. If it requires changing up, you have to be ready for changes."
Wed, 23 Nov 2011 06:40:12 -0800 New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez (neck) is not happy over head coach Rex Ryan's decision to give a few first-team reps in practice to QB Mark Brunell. Sanchez clearly was not amused as he spoke to reporters in the locker room Tuesday, Nov. 22. "That's the coach's decision," Sanchez said. "I'm just controlling what I can, and that's trying to improve, make better decisions with the football and taking the reps I have and doing well with them." Sanchez apparently is angry enough about it that he's giving Ryan the silent treatment. "For real. He has not said one word (to me)," Ryan said. "He probably knows what I'm doing. I know Mark Sanchez extremely well ... If it takes me to do this, and take a punch in the nose, I don't care. I'll take it. But we got to have it from him. He's the guy. He's my guy. And we have to have it from him."
Mon, 21 Nov 2011 10:47:21 -0800 Updating a previous item, New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan was fined $75,000 Monday, Nov. 21, for directing profanity toward a fan during the team's Week 10 loss to the New England Patriots.
Sun, 20 Nov 2011 10:10:16 -0800 New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan will be fined between $75,000 to $100,000 for using profane language toward a fan in Week 10.
Fri, 18 Nov 2011 06:00:14 -0800 New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said following the team's Week 11 loss that Week 12 will be a must-win game in hopes of making the playoffs. "Our playoffs start next week," Ryan said. "We better find a way to beat Buffalo."
Tue, 15 Nov 2011 07:30:05 -0800 New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said Denver Broncos QB Tim Tebow may not be the most accomplished passer; however Ryan added Tebow is a competitor and a winner. "You can go back and when people ask me about him, I thought he was a great competitor and he is a winner, and that's what he's showing right now," Ryan said. "Are there prettier passers than him? Yeah, absolutely. But again, (we) just (have to) try to find a way to beat him."
Mon, 14 Nov 2011 23:01:05 -0800 New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan apologized fo using an obscenity while angrily responding to a fan at halftime of the Week 10 game against the New England Patriots. "I obviously, you know, made a mistake," Ryan said Monday, Nov. 14. "I was full of emotion and just popped off, and obviously I know I represent the National Football League and I know I represent the Jets. I know it was a mistake and I apologize. This is who I am. I made a mistake."
Tue, 25 Oct 2011 06:07:15 -0700 New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said he will no longer talk about championship rings during his press conferences. Ryan got himself into trouble last week when he said he would have had "a couple of rings" if the San Diego Chargers had hired him for their head coaching vacancy in 2007. "I will no longer say the word rings anymore," Ryan said. "Kiss Belichick's rings, these rings here with San Diego, all this kind of stuff - I'm not going to use the word 'ring' anymore. I do get crushed every time I say it." Ryan, however, said "Lombardi Trophy" and "Super Bowl" are still in play.
Tue, 25 Oct 2011 05:58:09 -0700 New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan admitted Monday, Oct. 24, it was a bad idea to go into the season with a pass-heavy attack. The Jets used a three-receiver package as their base offense entering the season and let QB Mark Sanchez air the football out, but it didn't work. After four games, Ryan decided to go back to more of a run-based attack and that change has helped the Jets to a two-game winning streak. "I think maybe I got caught up in maybe being enamored with the type of personnel we had," Ryan said. "But at the end of the day, (we) never waited until the season went by. We went back to being who we were."
Thu, 20 Oct 2011 06:34:28 -0700 New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said he would have won a couple of Super Bowl titles had he been hired to coach the San Diego Chargers in 2007 instead of head coach Norv Turner. "Well, I think I would have had a couple of rings," Ryan said with a laugh. "I'm telling you, those teams were loaded. There's no question about it. But things happen for a reason. Obviously, Norv Turner has done a great job there, and A.J. (Smith) and everybody. That's a great franchise, and he's probably the best guy for the job at that time." Ryan later called Turner to clarify his remarks, according to a Jets spokesman. Turner, addressing the situation, fired back at Ryan after confirming that the Jets coach had called. "I hadn't seen his quote and I was a little bit surprised by the call, and after I saw the quote I didn't have the chance to ask him this, but I was wondering if he had those rings with the ones he's guaranteed the last couple of years," Turner said.
Sat, 15 Oct 2011 06:06:40 -0700 New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan encourages Miami Dolphins WR Brandon Marshall to carry out his plan of getting ejected in the team's Week 6 game. "If he wants to get kicked out of the game in the second quarter, I think he should," Ryan said. Marshall, upset about the Dolphins' 0-4 start this season, said he wasn't playing with enough passion, which is why he planned to get kicked out in the second quarter of the contest against the Jets. Marshall threatened to fight CB Antonio Cromartie and LB Bart Scott.
Wed, 12 Oct 2011 06:12:41 -0700 New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan defended offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer by saying he feels great about the job Schottenheimer is doing and that he is fortunate to have him. The Jets' offense continued to struggle in Week 5, with seven three-and-outs and a third-down conversion rate of just 27 percent. However, when asked if he would get more involved in the offense, Ryan replied, "this whole team is my responsibility ... I'm here for this whole football team, and this has my name on it."
Mon, 10 Oct 2011 08:01:01 -0700 New York Jets WRs Derrick Mason, Santonio Holmes and Plaxico Burress reportedly have met individually with head coach Rex Ryan in recent weeks to question offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer's offense. However, Ryan disputed the claim, saying no such conversations took place. When asked if he was concerned about a locker-room split, Ryan replied, "No. Shoot, we've got a long way to go. Nobody said it was going to be easy … Hopefully, we'll keep building and building and building. The teams that play the best at the end usually walk away with the trophy."
Mon, 10 Oct 2011 07:57:57 -0700 New York Jets WR Derrick Mason was benched during the first half of Week 5 and only played a handful of plays in the game. Head coach Rex Ryan said Mason was benched in order to give WR Jeremy Kerley more of a look. However, Mason was reportedly benched because of critical comments he made following a Week 4 loss.
Tue, 27 Sep 2011 07:41:32 -0700 Former NFL QB Joe Namath questioned the way New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan prepares his team for games. Ryan, meanwhile, said he would welcome Namath to watch his team practice and see how they prepare first-hand. Ryan jokingly said he might even let the long-retired Namath participate in practice and compete to be QB Mark Sanchez's backup. "I'm not gonna change who I am because Joe Namath said something," Ryan said. "Joe Namath can come in here, and if he can still throw, we'll have him as a backup quarterback. He doesn't know our team. He's on the outside. Even though he's a Jet, and once you're a Jet you're always a Jet ... but he's on the outside, he's not in these meetings. I think if he was he'd be shocked at the preparation."
Tue, 06 Sep 2011 09:45:31 -0700 New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said he feels more pressure coaching in the team's Week 1 game against the Dallas Cowboys on the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks "than any game I've ever coached." Ryan added the game just has a different feeling to it, maybe because he believes the Jets will be representing "this whole region, this whole area."
Fri, 17 Jun 2011 06:40:32 -0700 New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan is taking a wait-and-see approach with regards to the possibility of signing free-agent WR Plaxico Burress (Giants). "What (general manager Mike Tannenbaum) and I have always talked about is how we want to sign ... as many of our own players as we can," Ryan said. "We'll address (free-agency) once we have a better idea of what the rules are." Without directly addressing Burress, Ryan said that he is "excited that players throughout the league seem to have an interest in the Jets."
Fri, 27 May 2011 14:45:50 -0700 New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said he has spoken with former Washington Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs about how to handle things during a lockout. "He said take this time to get better," Ryan said. "Take time to gain an advantage on your opponents and whatever you think that is. He gave me some ideas and I followed them to a tee."
Mon, 23 May 2011 08:32:24 -0700 The New York Jets have legitimate interest in Tennessee Titans impending free-agent WR Randy Moss, according to sources. The uncertainty surrounding the makeup of the team's wide receiving corps has generated plenty of Moss speculation in the past few months. WRs Santonio Holmes, Braylon Edwards and Brad Smith will all be unrestricted free agents if the 2010 free agency rules aren't reinstated. The Jets will have more than a cursory interest in Moss if Holmes or Edwards do not return, per sources. Head coach Rex Ryan firmly believes that Moss is still a viable vertical threat.
Tue, 25 Jan 2011 08:01:51 -0800 New England Patriots WR Wes Welker said he regrets his subtle dig at New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan, which got him benched for the first series of his team's playoff loss to New York, according to ESPNBoston.com. "Yeah, sure I do," Welker told the Boston Herald on his way to the Pro Bowl in Honolulu. "I'm not going to get into any details about it, but I don't think it's worth putting coach (Bill Belichick) in that situation. So in a sense, I do regret it ... As much as you might want to get enticed into that stuff, at the end of the day, it's just not worth it." During his news conference leading into the Patriots' divisional playoff game against the Jets, Welker made more than 10 references to feet, a not-so-veiled reference to the foot-fetish flap involving Ryan and his wife.
Tue, 25 Jan 2011 07:16:31 -0800 New York Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer will return to the team next season, according to head coach Rex Ryan, reports Mark Cannizzaro and Tim Bontemps, of the New York Post.
Wed, 19 Jan 2011 13:30:46 -0800 Former Miami Dolphins executive vice president of football operations Bill Parcells recommended Rex Ryan to the New York Jets when they were looking for a head coach, reports ESPNNewYork.com's Ian O'Connor. Parcells said he would have hired Ryan in Miami if he did not had a strong working relationship with head coach Tony Sparano.
Tue, 11 Jan 2011 12:17:24 -0800 New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said the team's matchup against the New England Patriots in the Divisional Round this weekend is personal between himself and Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, according to ESPNNewYork.com's Rich Cimini. "This is about Bill Belichick versus Rex Ryan," Ryan said. "There's no question, it's personal. It's about him against myself. That's what it's going to come down to." The Patriots defeated the Jets 45-3 in their last matchup Dec. 6.
Tue, 14 Sep 2010 07:02:52 -0700 Baltimore Ravens LB Ray Lewis said he did not speak with New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan following their Week 1 game, according to Jamison Hensley, of The Baltimore Sun. "My team is the Ravens," Lewis said. "Everything I had to say was to my team." Leading up to Week 1, Ryan and Lewis engaged in a war of words. "It became personal when the schedule came out," Lewis said. "I respect Rex. We won a Super Bowl together. But anytime you challenge a warrior, a warrior is going to respond."
Mon, 06 Sep 2010 04:58:30 -0700 New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum admitted that he explored possible trades for CB Darrelle Revis, according to Rich Cimini, of ESPNNewYork.com. Thu, 02 Sep 2010 05:23:47 -0700 New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said he believes Baltimore Ravens FS Ed Reed (hip) will be ready to face the Jets in Week 1, according to Mike Preston, of The Baltimore Sun. "Somebody asked me about Ed Reed saying, 'You know Ed Reed hasn't practiced,'" Ryan said. "I said, guys, Ed Reed will play this game. Now he might not play the second game, third game or fourth game, whatever, but Ed Reed is going to play this game. I think part of that is a respect thing. He knows how disappointed I would be if he didn't play. I want to win the game, but I want to play against Ed. I want them at their best and I know they will be."
Fri, 30 Jul 2010 07:48:57 -0700 The New York Jets have signed head coach Rex Ryan to a two-year contract extension, a source told FOXSports.com's Jay Glazer. Ryan's contract now runs through the 2014 season.

Ryan met Tuesday, June 15, with Revis to discuss his highly-publicized, mini-protest during minicamp. Ryan said that he's satisfied with Revis' explanation on why he sat out a few plays at the end of the morning practice. Ryan called it "a great talk. It's funny because, when it's a football thing, we definitely see eye to eye. He knows what I expect of him and vice versa. We definitely see eye to eye."

And that's what we plan on doing this year."
