Chiefs | Alex Smith the guy

Mon, 21 Aug 2017 08:42:06 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith is the team's unquestioned starting quarterback, according to head coach Andy Reid.

Fantasy Tip: Patrick Mahomes has been turning heads in camp, but Smith doesn't appear on the hot seat. What's not hot, however, is his fantasy stock. He's a mediocre QB2 in fantasy.

Chiefs | Alex Smith has solid outing

Sun, 20 Aug 2017 13:28:06 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith went 8-for-9 for 83 yards and one touchdown in the preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals Saturday, Aug. 19.

Fantasy Tip: Smith has been a consistent player since has signed with the Chiefs and threw for a career-high 3,502 yards in 2016. He recorded 20 total touchdowns last season but probably should only be considered a No. 2 fantasy quarterback.

Chiefs | Alex Smith to play first half

Wed, 16 Aug 2017 17:38:03 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith will play the first half of the team's preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals Saturday, Aug. 19, according to head coach Andy Reid. QB Patrick Mahomes will play the third quarter, while QB Tyler Bray will play the fourth quarter.

Fantasy Tip: Smith recorded 3,502 yards and 20 total touchdowns in 2016 and probably will post similar numbers this season. He probably should be considered a low-end No. 2 quarterback in most fantasy leagues.

Chiefs | Tyreek Hill, Alex Smith sporting rapport

Fri, 04 Aug 2017 10:18:33 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith and WR Tyreek Hill has been a "great" connection all camp long, according to Chiefs.com's B.J. Kissel.

Fantasy Tip: The Chiefs forced themselves to make Hill their top receiver after releasing Jeremy Maclin this offseason, so it is a good thing Hill appears to be making the necessary strides in camp. Whether or not he can handle the No. 1 duties during camp or merely ends up being a complement to Travis Kelce is a matter of some debate, but news like this suggests the former is more than possible. He should be considered a WR2 with strong upside in fantasy.

Chiefs | Alex Smith already locked in

Fri, 16 Jun 2017 20:01:52 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith has "started back faster" in OTAs than ever before, according to assistant head coach Brad Childress.

Fantasy Tip: Even if Smith is off to the best start of his life in OTAs, it doesn't change his value to fantasy owners. He is a low-upside QB2.

Chiefs | Alex Smith talks Jeremy Maclin

Sat, 03 Jun 2017 18:40:33 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith said he was expecting free-agent WR Jeremy Maclin (Chiefs) to be his No. 1 receiver again this season and was "shocked" by Maclin's release. "For us, we have to move on a roll as a group," Smith said. "We obviously wish Jeremy well wherever he lands, and he'll land on his feet."

Fantasy Tip: Smith is a game manager for the Kansas City offense, and losing Maclin doesn't change his value. He remains strictly a fantasy backup.

Chiefs | Alex Smith to remain starter

Thu, 27 Apr 2017 22:19:17 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith will remain the team's starter, according to head coach Andy Reid.

Fantasy Tip: There was a 100 percent guarantee Reid was going to say this, and he certainly means it... for now. Reid says rookie Patrick Mahomes will "come in and learn," but it's hard not to feel a nagging sense of deja vu to a time when a young quarterback named Colin Kaepernick backed up a title contender led by Smith. The veteran never had much fantasy appeal due to his dink-and-dunk nature, but even as your fantasy backup it's hard to generate much enthusiasm for Smith.

Chiefs | Chiefs CEO backs Alex Smith as starter

Mon, 27 Feb 2017 20:19:37 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt reiterated what head coach Andy Reid has been saying throughout the offseason, that QB Alex Smith will continue to be the starting quarterback "going into 2017."

Fantasy Tip: The Chiefs, like a handful of other clubs, have been linked to Tony Romo, but Hunt, Reid and general manager John Dorsey have all publicly stated their support of Smith over the past number of weeks. And who can blame them? Since arriving in Kansas City in 2013, the former No. 1 overall draft pick has accumulated 76 touchdown passes compared to just 28 interceptions. Furthermore, he's completed higher than 65 percent of his throws. He deserves to remain the starter.

NFL | K.C. the right fit for Deshaun Watson?

Sat, 11 Feb 2017 18:19:34 -0800

Clemson QB Deshaun Watson's "ideal" destination in the 2017 NFL Draft would be the Kansas City Chiefs, according to NFL.com's Bucky Brooks. Brooks said head coach Andy Reid is a proven quarterback developer, and Watson could work behind QB Alex Smith until he is ready for a larger role.

Chiefs | GM backs Alex Smith as starter

Thu, 09 Feb 2017 10:50:26 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs general manager John Dorsey said QB Alex Smith will continue to be team's starting quarterback.

Fantasy Tip: Smith has been the starting quarterback for the Chiefs in each of the past four season and the team has made the playoffs in three of those seasons. He has thrown for at least 3,500 yards only once during his career and has posted at least 20 touchdowns twice. Owners in fantasy leagues should consider him a low-end No. 2 quarterback next season.

Chiefs | Alex Smith expected to remain starter

Mon, 16 Jan 2017 10:58:10 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith was given a vote of confidence Monday, Jan. 16, in regards to holding onto the starting job in 2017. Head coach Andy Reid told reporters: "Do I still think we can win with Alex? Yeah, we were right there."

Fantasy Tip: With weapons like Travis Kelce, Jeremy Maclin and Tyreek Hill, a less risk-averse quarterback might be able to put up low-end QB1 numbers in Kansas City. Instead, Reid is apparently willing to live through another season of conservative offense and presumably another short playoff stay with Smith as his guy. The Chiefs would be wise to at least consider the heir apparent at the position in April's draft.

Chiefs | Alex Smith decent in losing effort

Sun, 15 Jan 2017 21:38:33 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith went 20 of 34 for 172 yards, with one touchdown and one interception, in an 18-16 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, Jan. 15.

Fantasy Tip: It's hard to tell whether Smith was hampered by the Steelers' solid defense or by the weather conditions, but Kansas City's offense had one passing touchdown and one rushing score. Smith has some limitations that make him no better than a QB2 in most drafts entering 2017, but it could be much worse for the Chiefs.

Chiefs | Alex Smith stuck in neutral

Sun, 18 Dec 2016 19:56:57 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith completed 15 of his 28 pass attempts for 163 yards, no touchdowns and an interception in the Week 15 game against the Tennessee Titans. He did run four times for 11 yards and a touchdown to somewhat salvage his stat line.

Fantasy Tip: Smith has seven straight games with one or no passing touchdowns and he hasn't had a 300-yard passing game since Week 1. Needless to say he is more of a low-end QB2 in most fantasy leagues for the remainder of the season.

Chiefs | Alex Smith has solid performance

Sun, 04 Dec 2016 14:06:14 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith went 21-for-25 for 270 yards and one touchdown against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 13.

Fantasy Tip: Smith has been a bit inconsistent in terms of his passing yards this season but has thrown a touchdown in each of the last three games. He probably should be considered a No. 2 quarterback in fantasy leagues but should not be a starting option for owners.

Chiefs | Alex Smith has full practice

Wed, 30 Nov 2016 15:47:28 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (chest) participated fully in practice Wednesday, Nov. 30.

Fantasy Tip: Despite Smith's aptitude for not turning the ball over and his running ability, he's not a good fantasy quarterback. He's extremely tentative at times and rarely throws the ball deep. That being said, he's an under-the-radar play this week in a good matchup versus the Atlanta Falcons. The Chiefs may be forced to throw a lot in order to keep up with Atlanta.

Chiefs | Alex Smith accounts for two TDs

Sun, 20 Nov 2016 19:18:48 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith completed 24 of his 31 pass attempts for 261 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the Week 11 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also rushed twice for 10 yards and a score.

Fantasy Tip: Smith remains more of a QB2 in most fantasy formats, and that's especially the case in Week 12 in a difficult matchup on the road against the suffocating pass defense of the Denver Broncos.

Chiefs | Alex Smith struggles in return

Sun, 13 Nov 2016 13:42:39 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith threw for 178 yards and an interception on 25-for-38 passing. Smith missed Week 9 with a concussion.

Fantasy Tip: Smith has posted exactly one good fantasy game in 2016, which was the season opener. He should remain on the waiver wire in all leagues.

Chiefs | Alex Smith ready for Week 10

Fri, 11 Nov 2016 14:02:46 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (head, ear) practiced in full for a third straight day Friday, Nov. 11, and he is expected to start in Week 10 against the Carolina Panthers.

Fantasy Tip: Smith faces a Panthers pass defense which ranks 29th in the NFL, allowing 286.0 yards per game with 17 touchdowns and 26 pass plays of 20 or more yards. He is a solid streaming option if you need a bye-week replacement in fantasy leagues of 12 or more teams.

Chiefs | KC could let Alex Smith go?

Fri, 11 Nov 2016 04:37:13 -0800

The Kansas City Chiefs are considering moving on from QB Alex Smith following the season and plan to use the final seven games to evaluate his talent level.

Fantasy Tip: No one's saying it would be a huge mistake to cut Smith yet, but Kansas City has at least made the playoffs behind Smith's decent numbers and the Chiefs are on track to do well all season. This could be a ploy to lure Kirk Cousins to Kansas City should he leave the Washington Redskins in free agency. Stay tuned.

Chiefs | Alex Smith a full go

Thu, 10 Nov 2016 17:18:35 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (head, ear) was a full participant in practice Thursday, Nov. 10.

Fantasy Tip: The Chiefs aren't exactly a pass-happy team, but Smith has some DFS appeal in Week 10 against a Carolina secondary that has been routinely torched this season.

Chiefs | Alex Smith has full practice

Wed, 09 Nov 2016 15:21:56 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (head, ear) participated fully in practice Wednesday, Nov. 9.

Fantasy Tip: Smith is somewhat of a sneaky play in his return against the Carolina Panthers this week. Carolina has been stingy versus the run, but their pass defense is far worse than last year's. If nothing else, Smith is a cheap sleeper option in daily contests.

Chiefs | Alex Smith on track for Week 10 return

Mon, 07 Nov 2016 10:50:49 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (concussion) will return to the starting lineup in Week 10 against the Carolina Panthers, according to head coach Andy Reid.

Fantasy Tip: Nick Foles reportedly could have put some heat on Smith with a good performance in Week 9 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but he didn't exactly impress in that spot. Carolina's front seven is stout, while the back end is a bit green, so Smith should be able to put up quality QB2 numbers this week for owners looking for a bye-week quarterback to replace the likes of Matthew Stafford, Andrew Luck or Derek Carr.

Chiefs | Alex Smith likely to play next week

Sun, 06 Nov 2016 07:55:09 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (ear, head) is expected to return to action for Week 10's game against the Carolina Panthers, according to a team official. He has already been ruled out for Week 9's game versus the Jacksonville Jaguars as a precautionary measure.

Fantasy Tip: Nick Foles will receive the starting nod against the Jags this afternoon and was impressive in relief versus the Colts in Week 8, going 16-for-22 for 222 yards and two touchdowns. If you're in desperate need of a bye week replacement at quarterback, he's a serviceable option, although most fantasy owners should be able to do better.

Chiefs | Alex Smith limited in practice

Thu, 03 Nov 2016 20:19:37 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (head, ear) was limited in practice Thursday, Nov. 3.

Fantasy Tip: Well, Smith isn't going to be playing in Week 9 against the Jaguars, but this could be a sign he'll be ready to get back under center in Week 10. In his absence, Nick Foles will draw the start, but isn't a recommended option for just about all leagues.

Chiefs | Alex Smith to miss Week 9

Wed, 02 Nov 2016 11:10:51 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (head) has been ruled out for the team's Week 9 game because of a head injury. He said he did not fail any concussion tests but decided to sit out a week after talking with head coach Andy Reid and members of the front office. He hopes to play against the Carolina Panthers in Week 10.

Fantasy Tip: Owners can check in Smith's status next week to see if he is on track to play in Week 10. Nick Foles will start for the Chiefs this week and has some success as a replacement last week. He will be facing the Jacksonville Jaguars and can be a bye week replacement in deeper leagues but should be avoided in most leagues.

Chiefs | KC denies Alex Smith suffered concussion

Mon, 31 Oct 2016 11:03:09 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (head) reportedly did not suffer a concussion in a Week 8 win over the Indianapolis Colts, according to team trainer Rick Burkholder.

Fantasy Tip: Burkholder told reporters Monday the only reason Smith was held out was because he was put in the concussion protocol two separate times. Given how woozy the quarterback looked after the first-quarter hit that got him pulled in the first quarter and how long laid on the ground after the hit that eventually led to his exit in the second half, the Chiefs simply aren't being truthful. It is obvious, however, Kansas City is planning on starting Smith in Week 9 at the moment.

Chiefs | Nick Foles effective in QB relief

Sun, 30 Oct 2016 14:28:35 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Nick Foles was 16-for-22 for 223 yards and two touchdowns in relief of QB Alex Smith (concussion). The Chiefs beat the Indianapolis Colts, 30-14, on Sunday, Oct. 30.

Fantasy Tip: If Smith is unable to go, Foles will make a capable backup. He knows the system (Foles was Andy Reid's QB with the Philadelphia Eagles) and appeared to grasp the offense right away.

Chiefs | Alex Smith suffers concussion

Sun, 30 Oct 2016 12:22:20 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (concussion) suffered a concussion during the team's Week 8 game and will not return.

Fantasy Tip: Smith briefly left earlier in the game when he was first checked for a concussion but had to leave for a second time and was officially diagnosed with a concussion. His status for Week 9 is uncertain, so owners should have other options ready to use. Nick Foles would start if Smith is sidelined but would not be a strong fantasy option.

Chiefs | Alex Smith back in the game

Sun, 30 Oct 2016 11:08:58 -0700

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (ear) was able to return to the team's Week 8 game after missing some time because of an ear injury.

Fantasy Tip: Smith was checked for a concussion but was cleared and is back on the field. He has posted some decent numbers this season but should only be a starting option against favorable matchups.

Chiefs | Alex Smith cleared of concussion

Sun, 30 Oct 2016 10:55:52 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (ear, head) has been cleared of a concussion but is considered questionable to return to the team's Week 8 game because of a cut on his ear.

Fantasy Tip: It appears like Smith may have a chance to return to the Week 8 game, but the Chiefs may keep him out for the rest of the game. Owners should keep an eye on the situation to see if Smith will have to miss more time.

Sun, 30 Oct 2016 09:51:03 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (head) left the team's Week 8 game early and is being evaluated for a concussion.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to monitor the situation to see if Smith will have a chance to return to the game. Smith has posted decent numbers but should be considered a No. 2 quarterback. Nick Foles would start if Smith misses time but should also be considered a backup quarterback for owners.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith completed 17 of his 24 pass attempts for 214 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Week 7 game against the New Orleans Saints. He also rushed four times for seven yards.

Fantasy Tip: Smith has been a decent bye-week replacement and low-priced DFS option lately. He is a good streaming option in most fantasy leagues against a terrible Indianapolis secondary.

Chiefs | Alex Smith attempts career high

Sun, 02 Oct 2016 22:58:30 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith had a career-high 50 pass attempts in the Week 4 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He finished 30 for 50 with 287 yards, two touchdowns and an interception while running once for two yards.

Fantasy Tip: Smith remains a QB2 and bye-week replacement option only once the team returns from its own bye in Week 5.

Chiefs | Alex Smith enjoying his best camp with KC

Sun, 07 Aug 2016 17:12:25 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith has shown more willingness to throw downfield and improved decision-making overall, convincing his coaches he is enjoying the finest of his four training camps with the team, according to ESPN.com writer Adam Teicher.

Fantasy Tip: This feels like a believe-it-when-you-see-it report, but Smith's unwillingness to throw downfield throughout most of his career has pigeonholed him into the ultimate "game manager" quarterback. The 32-year-old has the weapons to cut it loose a bit more if he likes in Jeremy Maclin and Travis Kelce. As it stands now, he usually presents a pretty safe floor as an unexciting QB2 in most leagues.

Chiefs | Alex Smith sacked a lot

Sat, 09 Jan 2016 11:45:06 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith was sacked 45 times in the regular season -- tied for third most among quarterbacks.

Fantasy Tip: Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt might be licking his chops today, but the Texans won't have Jadeveon Clowney on the other end putting pressure on Smith. Moreover, Smith ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) has played well individually over his playoff career, throwing nine touchdowns and zero interceptions over three games. Still, Houston's pass rush will be something to watch against the Chiefs today.

Chiefs | Alex Smith succeeds in playoffs

Wed, 06 Jan 2016 14:42:48 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith has thrown for 291 yards per game and nine touchdowns and zero interceptions in three career playoff games.

Fantasy Tip: Unfortunately, Smith has also lost two of those three outings, but his numbers are positive. Smith and the Chiefs have a tough test in the Houston Texans, who were one of the top fantasy defenses against quarterbacks this season.

Chiefs | Alex Smith tosses two TDs in win

Sun, 03 Jan 2016 21:19:17 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith completed 14 of his 24 pass attempts for 156 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in the Week 17 game against the Oakland Raiders. He also ran nine times for 61 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Smith led his team to 11 wins and a wild-card game date with the Houston Texans next Saturday. He will be a cheap FantasyScore option, and a good play as long as Jeremy Maclin does not have any setbacks with the hip injury he suffered Sunday.

Chiefs | Alex Smith throwing more TDs

Sat, 02 Jan 2016 19:52:32 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith has eight touchdown passes over the last five games, and the Chiefs have run for just three touchdowns during the same stretch.

Fantasy Tip: Smith ($5,200, 10.4% of cap) isn't going to throw for a ton of yards, but he has tossed multiple touchdowns in three of his last five games, including two against the Oakland defense he faces in Week 17. He could worth a look as a low-priced alternative at the quarterback spot at FantasyScore if you want to spend up at other positions.

Chiefs | New career high for Alex Smith

Sun, 27 Dec 2015 17:12:15 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith completed 15 of 22 passes for 125 yards, two touchdowns and an interception and ran six times for 54 yards in a 17-13 win over the Cleveland Browns in Week 16, giving him a career-best 3,330 passing yards this season.

Fantasy Tip: Smith has failed to pass for 200 yards in four straight games, and while he usually bolsters his numbers with his scrambling ability, his upside is limited compared to other quarterbacks at FantasyScore.

Chiefs | Alex Smith effective vs. BAL

Sun, 20 Dec 2015 14:58:29 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith was 21 of 25 for 171 yards and one touchdown Sunday, Dec. 20, in a 34-14 victory over the Baltimore Ravens.

Fantasy Tip: Smith ($5,700, 11.4% of cap) wasn't flashy or overpowering, as the Kansas City defense did most of the damage, but you can't go wrong with throwing just four incomplete passes. Smith has been effective enough in leading Kansas City to an eight-game winning streak, and he should be a decent FantasyScore play.

Chiefs | Alex Smith has so-so afternoon

Sun, 13 Dec 2015 21:08:28 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith completed 15 of his 23 pass attempts for 191 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the Week 14 game against the San Diego Chargers. He also ran five times for 40 yards. His interception-free streak of 312 passes was snapped. It was the second-longest in NFL history behind New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (358).

Fantasy Tip: Smith has developed a nice rapport with Albert Wilson and Jeremy Maclin down the stretch, but he is still only worth using as an emergency QB1 or decent QB2 in fantasy formats which use two starting signal callers.

Chiefs | Alex Smith protecting the ball

Tue, 08 Dec 2015 17:00:33 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith has not thrown an interception in 305 attempts, which leads the NFL.

Fantasy Tip: Smith's ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) streak also ranks third in league history behind Tom Brady (358) and Bernie Kosar (308). He isn't the most prolific fantasy quarterback, but there's always value in not turning the ball over. The bad news is that the San Diego Chargers, Smith's opponent this week, have been better than average against the pass this year. Use caution.

Chiefs | Alex Smith accounts for two TDs

Sun, 29 Nov 2015 14:52:06 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith went 19-for-30 for 255 yards and two touchdowns against the Buffalo Bills Sunday, Nov. 29. He also rushed for 35 yards on six carries during the game.

Fantasy Tip: Smith has been able to post solid numbers over the last several weeks and has gone eight games without an interception. He is also producing with his legs by rushing for at least 33 yards in the last four games. He will be facing the Oakland Raiders next week and could be a solid starting option.

Sun, 22 Nov 2015 16:37:41 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith completed 20 of his 25 pass attempts for 253 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions in the Week 11 game against the San Diego Chargers, and he carried seven times for 33 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Smith was efficient and careful, but he did not account for any touchdowns to help out fantasy owners in that department. He appeared to have a second-half touchdown strike to Travis Kelce, but it was overturned via review.
