Since the Kansas City Chiefs improved to 8-0 on Sunday, Oct. 27, with a win over the Cleveland Browns, they triggered an escalator with the San Francisco 49ers in which the Chiefs now must give the 49ers a 2014 second-round pick as part of April's trade of QB Alex Smith. The 49ers can deal that pick for its second-round value before Tuesday's trade deadline, if so desired.

The Kansas City Chiefs have played it safe with QB Alex Smith through the first two preseason games, as he has reportedly looked downfield very little. He has yet to target WR Dwayne Bowe during the preseason.
Fri, 23 Aug 2013 18:08:24 -0700
The Kansas City Chiefs offensive line has struggled during the preseason, allowing seven sacks of QBs Alex Smith, Chase Daniel and Tyler Bray in the second exhibition game against the San Francisco 49ers. The team game-planned for the third preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, so they are expected to be more prepared for blitz packages.
Tue, 20 Aug 2013 21:52:58 -0700
Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith was the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers last year when they drafted WR A.J. Jenkins in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft. The deal to acquire Jenkins wasn't Smith's, but the management did ask the signal caller for his input. "We talked to Alex," head coach Andy Reid said Tuesday, Aug. 20. "Alex was very positive about it."
Fri, 16 Aug 2013 20:35:28 -0700
Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith completed seven of his 16 pass attempts for 62 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions in preseason action Friday, Aug. 16, against the San Francisco 49ers, his former team.
Thu, 15 Aug 2013 13:50:13 -0700
Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith has been a success early this preseason, and he's shown to be a leader in training camp in head coach Andy Reid's system. "He's a smart guy," Reid said of his quarterback. "He gets it. He makes it easy. He doesn't run out of gigabytes."
Fantasy Tip: Smith won't be asked to carry the team. He isn't that type of quarterback. However, if he limits his mistakes and makes smart decisions, he could be a big surprise. The upside is limited, though, and he won't put up the numbers to make him anything more than a weak QB2, most likely.
Sat, 10 Aug 2013 16:12:36 -0700
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said he attempted to acquire QB Alex Smith several times when he was the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles and Smith was with the San Francisco 49ers.
Thu, 01 Aug 2013 10:50:10 -0700
Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson gave QB Alex Smith high praise, calling him the best quarterback in the NFL. "Ultimately, every team has to have a quarterback," Pederson said. "I think we have the best in the league."
"There are a lot of great ones," Pederson said, "but over time, Alex has proven he can get it done. He's a sharp guy, he brings a wealth of knowledge, he's experienced, he's a proven winner the last couple of years, and he needs a team to embrace him."
Fri, 26 Jul 2013 19:36:51 -0700
Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith connected with WR Dexter McCluster on a deep pass down the middle that was hauled in for a touchdown Friday, July 26, on the first play at training camp. More importantly than the big plays, head coach Andy Reid likes consistency, and Smith went several plays into practice before throwing his first incompletion. "There weren't a lot of balls on the ground, and it looked like the defense had people covered," Reid said.
Fantasy Tip: Smith is considered a Top 25 fantasy quarterback right now, and he should be treated as a low-end QB2 until he proves otherwise. His average draft position (ADP) has been around the 180th overall pick.
Wed, 24 Jul 2013 17:09:48 -0700
Kansas City Chiefs QB Ricky Stanzi is the only quarterback on the team's roster not acquired by new head coach Andy Reid and new general manager John Dorsey, and he finds himself fighting for a roster spot. QB Alex Smith is the unquestioned starter, and QB Chase Daniel is the top backup. That leaves Stanzi and QB Tyler Bray fighting for the No. 3 job. "We're splitting reps. I'm just really worried about the reps I got. It's been nice to be out here a couple of days early just to refresh with the playbook and kind of get up to speed with the guys, especially with the receivers."
Wed, 17 Jul 2013 09:53:04 -0700
Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith said new head coach Andy Reid has been "very hands-on" regarding the quarterbacks and the offense, which incorporates some of the same terminology that Smith used under the direction of San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman for the past two seasons. He seems happy to have a new beginning. "To see them make the move and trade and get me, and it's what I wanted to happen -- very exciting. Now, it's my turn to go make the most of it."
Fantasy Tip: The story also points out that being sort of the unquestioned starter entering camp is something new for Smith, who says, basically, that it's nice to feel wanted. Given the weapons at his disposal and the productivity that Reid's system can generate, Smith may very well be a decent backup fantasy QB in 2013.
Fri, 28 Jun 2013 09:49:38 -0700
Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles labeled QB Alex Smith as a Super Bowl-caliber quarterback. "I think he is. He's got a great arm," Charles said. "He's been winning most all of his career. I think he wants to prove people wrong: That he is a good quarterback, that he can stay consistent."
Fantasy Tip: Charles may be going overboard, but he's understandably trying to give his new quarterback some confidence. He may be on to something, though, as the Chiefs will let Smith stretch the field more often than he was allowed to with his old team. Smith has plenty of offensive weapons and home run hitters surrounding him to surprise as a strong QB2 under Andy Reid's system.
Thu, 06 Jun 2013 10:28:04 -0700
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid isn't afraid to have QB Alex Smith throw the ball downfield often, something he wasn't accustomed to doing during his time as a starter for the San Francisco 49ers. Reid is challenging Smith to be more aggressive without being careless with the football and causing turnovers. "It's a new offense. I would tell any quarterback that comes in new that that's what you need to do. I've told them all that. Go ahead and take your shots and see what you can get away with, within reason. But if it's a close throw, there are going to be a few of those in the National Football League on game day so you need to know what you can get away with on each route," Reid said.
Fantasy Tip: Reid is known for preferring his offenses to stretch the field in the passing game, and although Smith hasn't had much experience with that, he's being groomed to be more of a gambler down the field. We don't expect Smith to become Drew Brees overnight, and Smith's completion percentage will likely suffer, as well as his lack of turnovers, but it might make him a bit more interesting from the fantasy side of things. Right now, continue to consider him a somewhat uninspiring backup choice with the potential to rise.
Sat, 01 Jun 2013 09:32:23 -0700
San Francisco 49ers quarterbacks coach Matt Nagy praised 49ers QB Alex Smith, saying he has been everything the team expected and more. Nagy noted Smith is both a leader by example and vocal.
"He's a true professional. He's in his (playbook) every day. He's always asking questions, trying to get better. He's being a leader for the other (quarterbacks) as well. I'm with him every single day," Nagy said. "Just talking X's and O's and past experiences he's had, he brings some good things to our attention as a staff. He has a lot of valuable experience. He's been through a lot. Having those experiences and coming in here to a team with a new staff, it's been an awesome experience. Throughout this process, we're taking in what he has, he's taking in what we have, and we're putting it all together and trying to make this work."
Fantasy Tip: Smith should bring something to an offense that may ask him to pass more than ever in a single season of his career. With a little help from the supporting cast, Smith could be a weekly spot starter.

Sat, 02 Mar 2013 08:34:59 -0800
San Francisco 49ers QB Alex Smith, who will be traded to the Kansas City Chiefs, should benefit in head coach Andy Reid's offense, particularly in the passing game, according to analyst Trent Dilfer. Reid will provide an enhanced passing game that's heavy on short and intermediate routes, which will suit Smith's strengths. "Now he's going to the same structure and a superior passing system," Dilfer said. "Not a superior system - I'm not taking a shot at the Niners at all. I love what the Niners do. But just from a passing standpoint. A passing-tree standpoint. Multiplicity in the dropback, and playaction and movement game. The screen game. Trick plays. You name it. This is one of the better passing systems in the league."
Thu, 28 Feb 2013 16:34:16 -0800
San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick said he believes QB Alex Smith will be successful next season no matter where he plays. "Of course, nothing can be finalized yet. Whether Alex is with us or he's somewhere else next season, he's been a great teammate to me," Kaepernick said. "(He's) been a great friend, a great mentor. So anywhere he goes, or if he's still with us, he's gonna be successful."
Thu, 28 Feb 2013 08:22:04 -0800
San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis said it will be difficult seeing QB Alex Smith play for another team in 2013 after being traded to the Kansas City Chiefs. "It was tough for me because I really care about Alex," Davis said. "I love the guy. It's hard to see him leave, but I know the business. I understand it. It's the nature of the business." Davis added Smith handled his role well after he was relegated to backup status following the emergence of QB Colin Kaepernick. "He's a classy guy. You saw what happened to him this year. He remained a 49er and he didn't complain. He didn't go to coach saying, 'Coach I should be the starter. I had a concussion and you took me out.' He didn't do none of those things."
Thu, 28 Feb 2013 05:23:48 -0800
The San Francisco 49ers-Kansas City Chiefs trade involving QB Alex Smith may not yet be finalized, according to former Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli. "I think they are still working through some of the absolute details of what the compensation is," Pioli said. "Because I think what happens in these trades, if you give up a pick for something or if you're going to give up two picks, what's been a new trend in the NFL is people generally kick picks back. Because teams don't like to see their, even if they are going to give up a higher pick they want to get something later in the draft so they at least have a volume of picks to have more opportunities."

Wed, 27 Feb 2013 09:11:41 -0800
The Kansas City Chiefs have reportedly completed a trade with the San Francisco 49ers for QB Alex Smith, although the deal will not be official until March 12. The compensation is unclear at this point; however, the Chiefs have made a clear commitment to Smith.
Fantasy Tip: The Chiefs were going to upgrade the quarterback position somehow this offseason, and they have done so through the acquisition of the veteran Smith, as opposed to a prospect via the NFL Draft. Last season, quarterbacks Matt Cassel and Brady Quinn combined to throw just eight touchdowns, in addition to 20 interceptions, for the Chiefs. Smith should not only provide some needed stability to the position, but he could thrive in new head coach Andy Reid's West Coast offense. Smith's mobility and accuracy should be real assets in a scheme based on timing and short passes.

Alex Smith, S Ray Ventrone and TE Benjamin Watson are not expected to be re-signed this offseason. QB Colt McCoy isn't expected to return, either, but LB D'Qwell Jackson probably has another year left, although the switch to a 3-4 defense lowers Jackson's value.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said Tuesday, Feb. 5, that he has great respect for QB Alex Smith, but indicated that the team owes him no special favors when it comes to where he's playing next season. Smith wants to return to a starting role, and the team could give him a fresh start by trading or releasing him; however, Harbaugh said that would be a business decision, not a personal one. "I don't think any player has those wishes granted when they're under contract," Harbaugh said when asked whether Smith had earned additional consideration. "And everything's different and every scenario is unique. Certainly something that we're not going to delve into and get into specifics at this point."
