Beason wrote, "Alex smith, don't hate on Cam (because) your stats would've gotten u cut if Peyton decided to come 2 San Fran. Truth b told. That's after a 13-3 yr." Smith used Newton as an example earlier this week that big stats don't always equate to wins.

San Francisco 49ers QB Alex Smith said he is not so concerned with the amount of passing yards he has per game this season. Smith said big stat lines do not necessarily win games. "This is the honest truth: I could absolutely care less on yards per game," Smith said. "I think that's a totally overblown stat. Because if you're losing games in the second half, guess what? You're like the Carolina Panthers and you're going no-huddle the entire second half and, yeah, Cam Newton threw for a lot of 300-yard games, that's great. You're not winning, though."

San Francisco 49ers QB Alex Smith has been impressed with the team's new additions at wide receiver: WRs Randy Moss, Mario Manningham and A.J. Jenkins. "It's like waking up on Christmas," Smith said. "You have a lot of new toys out there, new presents." Head coach Jim Harbaugh added Smith has done a good job of distributing the ball during workouts. "Alex has really been, in the two days out here, has been spreading the ball very well," Harbaugh said. "He's got a lot of options. That's been evident, too, for two days."

The San Francisco 49ers believe QB Alex Smith can improve his accuracy by working to fix two mechanical flaws they have found. The team thinks Smith can especially improve his throws outside the numbers if he corrects his flaws. The first flaw is that Smith locks his left leg as he strides during his throwing motion. The second flaw is sometimes he veers off to the right when he is supposed to take a straight drop back.

Smith signed a three-year, $24 million contract that includes $9 million guaranteed, the source said. The total money did not change, but originally he was to receive $8 million guaranteed. If Smith maxes out his incentive package - likely based on play time and undisclosed performance levels - the total package of the contract can reach $33 million.
