Smith used Newton as an example earlier this week that big stats don't always equate to wins.

Smith said big stat lines do not necessarily win games. "This is the honest truth: I could absolutely care less on yards per game," Smith said. "I think that's a totally overblown stat. Because if you're losing games in the second half, guess what? You're like the Carolina Panthers and you're going no-huddle the entire second half and, yeah, Cam Newton threw for a lot of 300-yard games, that's great. You're not winning, though."

The team thinks Smith can especially improve his throws outside the numbers if he corrects his flaws. The first flaw is that Smith locks his left leg as he strides during his throwing motion. The second flaw is sometimes he veers off to the right when he is supposed to take a straight drop back.

If Smith maxes out his incentive package - likely based on play time and undisclosed performance levels - the total package of the contract can reach $33 million.
