Smith could still return to team next season Fri, 07 Nov 2008 10:29:17 -0800 Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers general manager Scot McCloughan said Thursday, Nov. 6, that he has not ruled out the possibility QB Alex D. Smith (shoulder) could return to the club in 2009. Smith is scheduled to earn $9.625 million in base salary in 2009. Smith would have to agree to a pay cut of approximately $9 million for the 49ers to consider retaining him. "The discussions are wide open," McCloughan said, "no doubt about it."

Smith (shoulder) underwent surgery Thursday, Oct. 30, to remove a small piece of bone from his throwing shoulder. Dr. James Andrews performed the latest procedure. The procedure was considered relatively minor and is not expected to affect the mechanics of Smith's right arm.

Smith (shoulder) has been added to the team's Week 1 injury report as doubtful. He is having additional problems with his surgically repaired right shoulder. The team is not saying specifically what is wrong with him, but they noted the injury happened without contact during practice Friday, Sept. 5. Head coach Mike Nolan said Smith will consult with his doctor in Birmingham, Ala., for treatment recommendations. The team does not have a timetable on when he may return.
