Pittsburgh Pirates Ps Hayden Penn and Vinnie Chulk both signed with teams from the Japanese League Thursday, July 22, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review's Karen Price. Penn signed with Chiba Lotte and Chulk signed with the Hiroshima Tokyo Carp.

Pittsburgh Pirates minor league RP Hayden Penn, currently with Triple-A Indianapolis, is reportedly close to signing a deal with a team in Japan, according to Indianapolis Indians radio announcer Scott McCauley.

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Hayden Penn has cleared waivers and been outrighted to Triple-A Indianapolis, according to MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger. Penn has until Monday, April 19 to report to Indianapolis, or he can otherwise declare himself a free agent.

Alden Gonzalez, of MLB.com, reports Florida Marlins RPs Seth McClung, Tim Wood, Chris Leroux and Scott Strickland appear to be competing for the last spot in the bullpen this year. Locks for the pen are RPs Leo Nunez, Dan Meyer, Renyel Pinto, Brian Sanches, Burke Badenhop and Jose Veras. Other options for the bullpen could be Ps Rick VandenHurk, Hayden Penn, Clay Hensley and Andrew Miller. Meyer, Pinto, Veras or Sanches are all options to see some work in the ninth inning during the year if Nunez needs a rest, according to manager Fredi Gonzalez.

According to The Miami Herald, Florida Marlins RP Mike MacDougal, who is fighting for a bullpen spot, didn't help his cause after giving up three runs on a hit and three walks Sunday, March 21. RP Hayden Penn, who is also contending for a roster spot, turned in his worst performance of the spring, giving up four runs on five hits and a pair of walks in just 1 2/3 innings.
