Nationals | Yusmeiro Petit solid in spot start

Mon, 20 Jun 2016 23:57:02 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Yusmeiro Petit stepped in for the start Monday, June 20, against the Los Angeles Dodgers in place of the injured SP Stephen Strasburg. He allowed three runs, five hits and a walk with five strikeouts over six innings in a loss.

Fantasy Tip: Petit stepped up and did a great job considering he learned he was starting just 80 minutes before the game. If he gets another chance to start he might be worth a look in deeper NL-only fantasy and DFS play.

Nationals | Stephen Strasburg scratched from start

Mon, 20 Jun 2016 18:11:40 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Stephen Strasburg (back) was scratched from his scheduled start Monday, June 20, against the Los Angeles Dodgers due to a strained upper back. SP Yusmeiro Petit will start in his absence.

Fantasy Tip: Strasburg was to be a two-start pitcher this week for fantasy owners in head-to-head leagues, too, but that's now off. Wait to see if he can throw his mid-week bullpen session and get the green light for his next scheduled start next weekend before activating him again in daily leagues.

Nationals | Yusmeiro Petit records first save

Fri, 17 Jun 2016 23:36:41 -0700

Washington Nationals RP Yusmeiro Petit pitched a scoreless ninth inning against the San Diego Padres on Friday, June 17, to earn his first save of 2016.

Fantasy Tip: With Jonathan Papelbon (intercostal) on the DL and Shawn Kelley having pitched two days in a row, manager Dusty Baker turned things over to Petit, whose only previous career save was a three-inning job last May. He closed out the Friars, but Kelley remains the primary closer while Papelbon is out.

Nationals | Stephen Strasburg could pitch Thursday

Wed, 13 Apr 2016 15:12:15 -0700

The Washington Nationals are hoping SP Stephen Strasburg (illness) can make a start against the Atlanta Braves Thursday, April 14, after being scratched with an illness Wednesday, April 13. RP Yusmeiro Petit could make a spot start Thursday if Strasburg still isn't ready.

Fantasy Tip: Strasburg gave up just one run on six hits in six innings in a win against the Braves in his season debut last week. Hopefully for his owners he's able to start tomorrow. If he's back, make sure to get him back into all starting lineups.

Nationals | Jonathan Papelbon likely to stay

Mon, 11 Jan 2016 09:06:44 -0800

Washington Nationals RP Jonathan Papelbon is expected to remain with the Nationals, especially after the team just traded RP Drew Storen to the Toronto Blue Jays. General manager Mike Rizzo hasn't ruled out a trade of Papelbon, but the GM spoke highly of his closer on a conference call Saturday, Jan. 9. "We see Papelbon as being one of our late-inning relievers. He's been very effective at it his entire career, including last year, except for the last portion of the season," Rizzo said. Papelbon is guaranteed $11 million in 2016. RPs Shawn Kelley, Yusmeiro Petit and Trevor Gott were mentioned by Rizzo as possibilities for the eighth-inning setup role to Papelbon.

Fantasy Tip: Despite all of the talk surrounding Papelbon's fracas with Bryce Harper at the end of last season, he remains one of the better closers in the league and is on a winning club. Now that Storen is out of the picture, Papelbon is an even safer fantasy closer as a top-tier ninth-inning fireman.

Nationals | WAS agrees to terms with Yusmeiro Petit

Wed, 09 Dec 2015 18:27:34 -0800

The Washington Nationals have agreed to terms with free-agent SP Yusmeiro Petit (Giants) on a one-year deal, pending a physical.

Fantasy Tip: Petit went 1-1 with a 3.67 ERA in 42 appearances (one start) for San Francisco last season. The Giants employed him as a swingman for much of his tenure with the club but he is likely to serve primarily as a reliever for the Nats, which will reduce his fantasy value dramatically.

Giants | Yusmeiro Petit to start Sunday

Thu, 01 Oct 2015 18:10:32 -0700

San Francisco Giants P Yusmeiro Petit will start the final game of the regular season against the Colorado Rockies Sunday, Oct. 4. SP Madison Bumgarner had been scheduled to pitch but he has been shut down.

Fantasy Tip: Petit ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) is 1-1 with a 3.65 ERA in 40 appearances this season, only one of which has not come in relief. He will probably be on a pitch count and is not a great FantasyScore option.

Giants | Yusmeiro Petit to start Saturday

Fri, 22 May 2015 05:52:58 -0700

San Francisco Giants RP Yusmeiro Petit will start Game 2 of the doubleheader at the Colorado Rockies Saturday, May 23.

Fantasy Tip: Petit is making his first start of 2015 and sports a 5.74 lifetime ERA in nine appearances, which includes five starts, at Coors Field. Avoid him in all formats.

Giants | Yusmeiro Petit could get a start

Tue, 21 Apr 2015 20:25:21 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Yusmeiro Petit might get the start Thursday, April 23, against the Los Angeles Dodgers in place of the injured SP Jake Peavy (back). There has been no official word from manager Bruce Bochy on who the fill-in will be.

Fantasy Tip: Even if Petit gets the nod he is not a recommended fantasy play against a solid Los Angeles lineup top to bottom.

Giants | Jake Peavy has lower back strain

Sun, 19 Apr 2015 12:24:57 -0700

Updating a previous report, San Francisco Giants SP Jake Peavy (back) was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a lower back strain. He had been scheduled to make his next start against the Los Angeles Dodgers Thursday, April 23. Manager Bruce Bochy is uncertain how his spot in the rotation will be filled but the club could turn to Ryan Vogelsong or Yusmeiro Petit for a spot start or promote a starter from the minors. Bochy also mentioned the team could use a four-man rotation for the next week but it would require some of their starters to pitch on short rest.

Fantasy Tip: It is still uncertain how much time Peavy is expected to miss. Both Vogelsong ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) and Petit have struggled this season and neither pitcher would make a viable FantasyScore option Thursday.
