Buccaneers.com reports the Tampa Bay Buccaneers currently have 14 wide receivers on their roster. The team normally carries six wide receivers so they have some cutting to do if they are going to maintain six for the 2006 season. Clearly, WRs Joey Galloway and Michael Clayton are good bets to earn spots. WRs David Boston and Ike Hilliard are the most experienced of the rest. Three of the candidates as of late June are 2005 draftees, WRs Larry Brackins, Paris Warren and J.R. Russell, which means the Bucs are looking forward to taking another extended look at them. WR Edell Shepherd remains an intriguing receiver for the team. The rest of the wide receivers are free agent additions and first-year players.

Chris Harry, of the Orlando Sentinel, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Larry Brackins has the odds stacked against him when it comes to making the team's final roster. Brackins is a fifth-round pick from Pearl River Community College. In the past 20 years, NFL teams have drafted nine players directly from junior college. That's nine out of 5,553, or one of every 617. Though slowed by a nagging hamstring during last week's minicamp, Brackins remained one of the most intriguing newcomers on a roster infused by youth this offseason. Brackins has good size (6 feet 4/205 pounds) but less-than-stellar speed (4.63 in the 40). "I just can't believe the Bucs are going to get this guy for fifth-round money," Pearl River head coach Tim Hattan said. His Buccaneers' teammates have started to believe in Brackins. Training camp will be the place for Brackins to shine in his attempt to make the team.

Roy Cummings, of the Tampa Tribune, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie WR Larry Brackins (hamstring) was still forced to skip all the on-field work during practice Wednesday, June 22, while he recovers from a hamstring injury. Brackins said he is confident the time off won't affect his chances of making the team, because he plans to be at full speed when training camp opens, but head coach Jon Gruden doesn't necessarily agree. "Yes, it hurts him,'' Gruden said of Brackins' absence from workouts. "You've got to practice. They might tell you different, but Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh - they're always hitting balls. And this kid, he's raw. He needs the work.'' Brackins has been studying the team's playbook while he is sidelined.
