Texas Rangers INF Alberto Gonzalez has won the utility job, but he will likely be limited to a backup shortstop role behind SS Elvis Andrus. Gonzalez edged out 2B Anderson Hernandez. The latter is headed to Triple-A Round Rock to play shortstop regularly.

The Pittsburgh Pirates optioned SS Chase d'Arnaud, P Rudy Owens, P Jeff Locke and P Duke Welker. They also reassigned OF Robbie Grossman, INF Anderson Hernandez, C Tony Sanchez, C Ramon Cabrera, P Michael Crotta and RP Logan Kensing to minor league camp.

Pittsburgh Pirates 2B Anderson Hernandez will earn $500,000 if he makes the major league roster. RP Logan Kensing will make $675,000 if he makes the major league roster. C Jose Morales will make $650,000 if he's on the major league roster. Morales can request his release if he's not on the major league roster March 31 and again May 15.

Shuck and SS Tommy Manzella to minor league camp, the Houston Chronicle's Steve Campbell reports. They also designated SP Ryan Rowland-Smith for assignment.

Houston Astros OF T.J. Steele (elbow) and IF Anderson Hernandez (back) were both cleared to play Tuesday, March 1, though neither did, according to MLB.com's Brian McTaggart. The team is still holding back OF J.D. Martinez (quadriceps) until he is re-evaluated.
