ESPNChicago.com's Bruce Levine reports the Chicago Cubs have promised to retire Hall of Fame OF Andre Dawson's No. 8 jersey if he is selected to wear a Cubs hat into the Hall of Fame. Hall officials have yet to decide whether he will wear a Cubs hat or Montreal Expos hat, and an decision is expected by spring training.

MLB.com's Barry M. Bloom reports Hall of Fame OF Tony Gwynn said OF Jim Rice and OF Andre Dawson should be in the Hall of Fame. "I'm a big fan of the Hall of Fame," Gwynn said. "I felt guilty. Here I am the first year on the ballot and I got in, and these guys have been on the ballot for a while and they hadn't. And that kind of bothers me."

ESPN.com reports former MLB OF Andre Dawson was not elected to the Hall of Fame. Dawson was third in this year's voting, earning 65 percent of the ballots. Dawson needed 75 percent of the vote for admission into the Hall of Fame.

Updating a previous item, MLB.com's Mike Bauman reports only one player, former CL Bruce Sutter, was elected off the 2006 ballot into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Those who received substantial votes, but still fell short of the 75 percent mark required, include OF Jim Rice, CL Rich Gossage, OF Andre Dawson and SP Bert Blyleven.
