Wilson threw one scoreless inning of relief Friday, June 8, allowing just one single and a walk. Manager Joe Maddon chose to use the utility infielder to pitch the eighth as relief pitchers Brian Stokes, Tim Corcoran and Chad Orvella had just allowed eight runs and walked seven batters. Wilson, who had not pitched since high school, was the first non-pitcher to take the mound for the Devil Rays since retired 3B Wade Boggs pitched on Aug. 10, 1999.

"There are lots of pieces in the puzzle that are significant in a career. If you leave out one piece of the puzzle, the Hall of Fame career is incomplete. It was a mixture of the three teams that enabled me to be where I am today," Boggs said.

He was selected by 474 of the record 516 voters who are 10-year members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America. The 91.86 percent of ballots he received was the 19th-highest percentage in Hall history, and he became the 41st player elected on his first chance.
