Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning set a new touchdown record through five games when he threw his 19th touchdown pass of the season to TE Julius Thomas. Manning broke the previous record of 18, set by former Minnesota Vikings QB Daunte Culpepper in 2004. Manning now has 20 touchdowns through five games.

Schwartz has not said whether QB Drew Stanton or QB Daunte Culpepper would start the game. Schwartz said, "So the decisions we'll make will be based on where we are offensively, what gives us the best chance to win this game. It won't have anything to do with finding out about players further on down the line and everything else. That hasn't been part of the M.O. from the beginning here, and it won't be."

Culpepper initially did not warm up before the game but eventually went on the field after an animated conversation with general manager Martin Mayhew. "Daunte's a competitor. He wants to be out there. We want backups that want to be out there. I'd much rather have that situation with Daunte than a guy that just tips his cap and says, 'Fine.' He still views himself as a starting quarterback, and rightfully so. But Matt's our starter, and when he's healthy enough, he'll be out there," head coach Jim Schwartz said.

Culpepper was expected to start after QB Matthew Stafford (knee, shoulder) was listed as doubtful for the game and missed practice during the week. When asked about the situation, Culpepper told Oliver he did not want to talk about it.

Nicholas J. Cotsonika, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz reiterated Monday, Oct. 12, that QB Matthew Stafford (knee) remains the team's starting quarterback. However, Stafford's status for Week 6 remains uncertain with a knee injury. Schwartz said the team would see how much Stafford practices and how his knee progresses throughout the week. Stafford does not necessarily need to be 100 percent, but must be mobile enough to escape trouble and protect himself. If he can't play, QB Daunte Culpepper would start.

"My position is that if you want to be the best you have to beat the best," Culpepper said in the statement. "Coach Schwartz gave me a fair opportunity to compete for the starting job and now the decision has been made that Matt is the best quarterback in Detroit. I support the decision and I am ready to settle into my role. Matt is a great guy and a talented young quarterback. Although players recognize Stafford's talent and potential, the veterans have grown fond of QB Daunte Culpepper and respect the strides he made throughout the offseason. The veterans felt bad for Culpepper that he did not win the starting job.
