At 260 pounds, Culpepper has lost more than 30 pounds since he came out of semi-retirement and joined the Lions midseason last year. "I'm seeing him make throws that he made back when he was at Minnesota," WR Calvin Johnson said. Head coach Jim Schwartz added Culpepper has "put the rest of the league on notice that he's back."

Lions | Stafford could start sooner than later
Mon, 01 Jun 2009 08:06:24 -0700

Peter King, of SI.com, reports Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said there will be strong competition for the starting quarterback job between QB Matthew Stafford and QB Daunte Culpepper this offseason. "The last minicamp in June, we're going to have an arms race,'' Schwartz said. If Stafford shows he is the best quarterback, he could start as early as Week 1. Schwartz has been impressed with Stafford's delivery thus far. "We've got two criteria for when Matthew will play,'' said Schwartz. "One is he'll play when he's ready. The second is when he's the best quarterback for us. But so far, whatever the opposite of buyers' remorse is, that's what we have. We knew he had the terrific NFL arm. But we've found out his release is just textbook classic.''

"He's a pro, and I trust Daunte. He's got a lot of ability, and I anticipate that if we had something to do today, Daunte would be the guy today. But we've got a lot of time to work, and we'll see how it goes," Mayhew said.
