Detroit Tigers SP Anibal Sanchez (3-1) struck out a franchise-record 17 batters Friday, April 26, in a victory against the Atlanta Braves. He shattered the previous club record of 16 strikeouts by Mickey Lolich, which he accomplished twice within a three-week period during the 1969 season. Sanchez allowed five hits and one walk over eight scoreless innings but was removed from the game because he had thrown 121 pitches.

Team Venezuela has been denied permission by the Detroit Tigers to use SP Anibal Sanchez in a World Baseball Classic game Sunday, March 10. He threw 20 pitches Friday, March 8.

Detroit Tigers SP Anibal Sanchez's deal could be worth $91 million if the team picks up his option for a sixth season. His 2018 option is worth $16 million with a $5 million buyout. Sanchez's signing bonus is worth $4 million. He'll make $8 million next season, $15 million in 2014 and $16 million a year from 2015 to 2017.

The Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers are the only teams remaining in the pursuit of free-agent SP Anibal Sanchez (Tigers), according to his agent, Gene Mato. The Cubs were close to signing Sanchez to a five-year deal Thursday, Dec. 13.
