Thu, 05 Apr 2012 16:33:48 -0700 Pittsburgh Pirates RP Jason Grilli will be the team's primary eighth-inning setup man out of the bullpen, according to skipper Clint Hurdle. RP Tony Watson is the only lefty in the pen, and RP Chris Resop is set for the seventh inning. RP Jared Hughes will be in long relief, and Hurdle has yet to define RP Evan Meek's role. "It's going to be interesting to see where his niche evolves," Hurdle said, adding that Meek has been effective against left-handed batters as well as righties.

RPs Joel Hanrahan, Jason Grilli and Chris Resop appear to be locks to make the team, with RPs Tony Watson, Evan Meek and Juan Cruz also having good chances of being on the 25-man roster. RPs Daniel Moskos, Jared Hughes and Chris Leroux are also in the hunt for a spot in the bullpen, although Leroux is out of minor league options.

Cabrera had missed a flight connection on his way to spring training camp and Resop was battling an illness.

"Resop and Veras have been in 40 games," he said. "They can't pitch every night. I've got to have other guys contribute. Also, I felt he could get them out. You've got to pick your poison on where you want to go from there." Wood (0-3), who has only thrown 7 2/3 innings this season, allowed one run on two hits and a walk over one-third of an inning and was tagged with the loss Friday.

He allowed three earned runs, seven hits and four walks over 4 2/3 innings in the 104-pitch performance. RP Chris Resop came on and worked 1 1/3 scoreless innings for the win. McDonald's next scheduled start will now come Sunday, June 26, as manager Clint Hurdle juggled his rotation a bit.
