The Star Tribune reports the Minnesota Vikings contacted free agent OG David Dixon (Vikings) to judge his interest in returning to the team. Dixon, who is coaching part-time at Burnsville High School, said he is not interested in playing.

Mike Fermoyle, of the Pioneer Press, reports free agent/retired OL David Dixon says he was contacted by Arizona Cardinals assistant coach Everett Lindsay several weeks back about the possibility of returning to the NFL. Dixon, for the time being, remains unofficially retired.

Tice has dropped hints in newspapers recently that he might like to see Dixon return, although the coach said Monday, Aug. 15, that he wasn't "going to give him a call yet."

Kevin Seifert, of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, reports Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Tice has been disappointed with his offensive line's play and even threatened to re-sign OL David Dixon, who has yet to officially retire. "We have to have consistency and at this points, offensive line-wise, I didn't see that, so there is some concern there for me," said Tice.

ESPN.com's John Clayton reports Minnesota Vikings OL David Dixon is at the team's minicamp despite the fact he remains unsigned. The team has yet to offer him a contract. Dixon won't participate in any of the weekend drills, but he wants to convince HC Mike Tice that he is in shape. He also wants to prove he can come back to the team and compete for his starting job.

Don Seeholzer, of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, reports with the contract extension for OT Mike Rosenthal, the Minnesota Vikings have four of their starting five offensive linemen under contract through the 2007 season. Only RG David Dixon, 35, is not under contract for that length of time. Dixon's contract is set to expire after this season.

Minnesota Vikings OG Lewis Kelly played well Sunday, Oct. 5, against the Atlanta Falcons after head coach Mike Tice inserted him into the lineup in place of starting ORG David Dixon. Kelly is considered a potential starter next season, most likely at the right guard position, and he certainly helped himself with a strong game. Tice told him he'd get one drive, and if he played well, he'd stay in the game. Kelly never came back out, and the offense scored three touchdowns with him in the lineup. He also made several key blocks, including one on rookie RB Onterrio Smith's 28-yard run.

Coach Mike Tice said Dixon's injury was fine for most of the week, but started bothering him Friday morning. Tice said if the team had a game Friday, Dixon would not have played. Although the Vikings are struggling to restructure the contract of LT Brad Badger, the team remains patient.

Updating an ongoing story, the Star Tribune reports the Minnesota Vikings are close on contract agreements with OL Corbin Lacina and David Dixon. Those deals should be finalized Thursday. Also, the Vikings have presented their "final offer" to FB/special teams player Harold Morrow, and are expecting to hear from his agent Thursday.

According to the Star Tribune, Minnesota Vikings G Corbin Lacina has agreed in principle to a restructured contract. It should be worked out officially by Wednesday. The Vikings expect to work out a new deal with guard David Dixon soon as well. It now appears negotiations on a new deal for OT Brad Badger will not happen until after the NFL Scouting Combine. There has reportedly been no progress in the negotiations with WR Chris Walsh. The sticking point is he lower amount the Vikings want to pay if Walsh is injured. Coach Mike Tice indicated the situation will be resolved one way or another by Thursday.

The Star Tribune reports the Minnesota Vikings have approached several players about restructuring their contracts, including OL Corbin Lacina, David Dixon and Brad Badger, CB Robert Tate, WR Chris Walsh and P Mitch Berger. Coach Mike Tice said Thursday Lacina agreed in principle to do so. "He will work with us," Tice said. "Hopefully he'll finish his career with the Vikings." Reportedly, Dixon and Tate will be willing to renegotiate as well.

Bill Williamson reports for the Pioneer Press the Minnesota Vikings plan to put OL David Dixon and Corbin Lacina back in the starting lineup this week. Dixon was benched in favor of Everett Lindsay, and Calvin Collins played in front of Lacina against the Packers last week. Lindsay is expected to be the backup at every position this week, and Collins likely will spell Lacina. FS Orlando Thomas and RCB Robert Tate are scheduled to start again. Thomas (death in family) missed practice today, but he should be back tomorrow. Eric Kelly could see a lot of action at left corner if Dale Carter (hamstring) can't play. Jim Nelson is expected to start at weakside linebacker and Andre O'Neal is set to start at strongside linebacker. QB Spergon Wynn is also slated to start.

Sources said coach Dennis Green made the decision. Dixon has been a starter for the past three seasons. It also appears Calvin Collins will start at left guard in place of Corbin Lacina. LB Jim Nelson likely will start at weak-side linebacker in place of LB Ed McDaniel (shoulder). If LB Lemanski Hall (shoulder) can't play, Andre O'Neal probably will take his place at strong-side linebacker.

Vikings head coach Dennis Green said that SS Robert Griffith (leg), who has been out because of a broken right leg since Sept. 23, likely won't play Sunday at Philadelphia. Griffith will likely have to wait until the Nov. 19 game against the New York Giants. However he is expected to practice this week. OL Corbin Lacina (strained calf) isn't expected to play Sunday because of a strained calf suffered against Tampa Bay on Oct. 28. He will be listed as doubtful, according to Green. OL David Dixon (strained calf) is day to day with a strained calf suffered against Tampa.

Mike Wells reports for the Pioneer Press Minnesota Vikings OL Calvin Collins has played sooner than expected for the team due to injuries along the offensive line. Collins saw spot duty Oct. 21 against the Packers and last week against the Buccaneers with left guard Corbin Lacina was injured. Collins' role may increase even more now that Lacina and RG David Dixon are injured with calf strains. Lacina could be out two to four weeks, and Dixon is listed as day to day.

The Pioneer Press reports Minnesota Vikings special teams player Fearon Wright suffered a concussion when Buccaneers backup OL Todd Washington hit him while returning a kickoff. LB Lemanski Hall suffered a right hip flexor late in the game. He will be re-examined today. As previously reported the Vikings lost two offensive linemen during the game, starting guards Corbin Lacina and David Dixon. Lacina suffered a strained left calf while Dixon strained his right calf. Lacina could miss more time. Dixon's injury doesn't appear as serious. Both will be re-evaluated today. The team has a BYE next week.

Bill Williamson reports for the Pioneer Press Minnesota Vikings coach Dennis Green said he is confident DL John Randle will remain with the team. Green, who is at the NFL Combine, said he spoke to Randle this week and he feels good about the chances of a return. Green downplayed a report that indicated left tackle Todd Steussie and strong safety Robert Griffith could be cut. The team has agreed to terms with OL David Dixon and Brad Badger on extensions that will save the team about $1.7 million. Badger took a slight pay cut and added an extra season to his contract, meaning heís committed to the team through 2002. Dixon added at least one season to his deal. Green also said the team is trying to sign OC Matt Birk to a new contract by next Friday. He is reportedly looking for a five-to-seven year contract worth around $20 million.

Updating previous stories, the Pioneer Press reports the possibility of OL David Dixon being released by the Minnesota Vikings has increased. If he does not accept an extenstion as he's been offered he could be gone. Dixon is scheduled to count about $2.8 million against this season's salary cap and his release would save the team about $1.8 million. DE Gabe Northern and OL Brad Badger are reportedly close to being released, but Badger's situation could change if Dixon is let go. Coach Dennis Green is expected to meet with agent Gary Uberstine, representing DL John Randle, early next week. The two will discuss Randle's desire to be traded or released from the team.

As a follow up to last night's report, Bill Williamson reports for the Pioneer Press the Minnesota Vikings have agreed in principle on a deal that would save the Vikings about $1 million in salary cap room this season with OT Korey Stringer. It is believed Stringer's restructuring affects only this season's pay. Agents for S Robert Griffith and OG David Dixon confirmed they have begun preliminary talks about restructuring their client's contracts. RB Robert Smith's agent, Neil Cornrich, dropped hints Smith would delay his retirement until after June 1 to help the team's cap situation.

The team reportedly approached OG David Dixon about restructuring his deal, but he is balking. He's reportedly not happy with the extra future years of the offer that didn't increase his salary. He could be potentially released if the situation is not resolved.

The Star Tribune reports Vikings RB Robert Smith will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and he will skip the Pro Bowl. Special teams player Lemanski Hall will have arthroscopic surgery on an ankle, and OG David Dixon will have surgery on his right elbow. OLT Todd Steussie may need further tests on his ankle to determine whether he needs surgery. OL Corbin Lacina will need no further tests on his sprained MCL. The team has not been requested, as of yet, to grant permission to offensive line coach Mike Tice to interview elsewhere. Owner Red McCombs threw his support behind scathing statements made by WR Randy Moss after Sunday's loss. McCombs, however, was not as firm when asked if he still planned to offer Moss a contract extension this spring or whether he could wait until after the 2001 season.
