Rangers | Geovany Soto works with idol

Tue, 11 Jun 2013 19:40:34 -0700

Texas Rangers special assistant and former C Ivan Rodriguez is in town this week, and he spent time with C Geovany Soto Tuesday, June 11. The duo worked on Soto's throwing. "We just want to stay consistent in our throwing," Soto said. "I've been throwing OK, but it's something you want to stay on top of. Who was better throwing than Pudge?"

Rangers | A.J. Pierzynski will remain starter

Mon, 20 May 2013 16:20:17 -0700

Texas Rangers C A.J. Pierzynski will remain the primary catcher when he returns to the team this week, even though C Geovany Soto had five hits in 12 at-bats with two home runs and four RBIs with regular playing time. Soto will return to backup duties, and he'll start one or two times a week.

Rangers | A.J. Pierzynski ready to return

Mon, 20 May 2013 12:09:43 -0700

Texas Rangers C A.J. Pierzynski (oblique) is ready to return from the disabled list Tuesday, May 21, after his two-game stint with Double-A Frisco. Pierzynski went 1-for-3 with an infield single Monday, May 20, and he went 1-for-6 and threw out two base stealers in the game Sunday, May 19.

Fantasy Tip: Pierzynski will return to the primary catching duties, pushing Geovany Soto back to backup duties.

Rangers | A.J. Pierzynski eyeing rehab stint

Wed, 15 May 2013 13:07:27 -0700

Texas Rangers C A.J. Pierzynski (oblique) hopes to start his rehab assignment with Double-A Frisco Sunday, May 19, and he hopes to return from the disabled list Tuesday, May 21. "It's definitely gotten better," Pierzynski said. "From the time I did it, the doctors and the trainers said it would be a month, and Friday will be just about a month. Swinging the bat was the biggest thing, and I've been hitting the last couple days. Yesterday, it was free and easy."

Fantasy Tip: Oblique injuries usually take some time to come back from, but Pierzynski is a quick healer. He'll return to full-time catching duties when he's back, pushing Geovany Soto to his usual backup role.

Rangers | A.J. Pierzynski doesn't expect to miss much time

Fri, 10 May 2013 16:03:23 -0700

Texas Rangers C A.J. Pierzynski (oblique) is hoping that he can play when he's eligible to return from the 15-day disabled list. "As long as he doesn't have to go up there (to the plate) aggravating it, it will probably get better," manager Ron Washington said. "He really wanted to play through it because he's done it before. We hope the 11 days helps." C Geovany Soto is ready for regular playing time with Pierzynski out at least 10 more days.

Fantasy Tip: Soto's window for increased playing won't be long, but oblique injuries can't be rushed back from, so stay tuned. Soto can be plugged into AL-only or two-catcher rosters for the short term, but don't expect a ton of offensive production.

Rangers | More on A.J. Pierzynski

Thu, 09 May 2013 10:47:46 -0700

Updating a previous report, Texas Rangers C A.J. Pierzynski (oblique) landed on the disabled list with a Grade 1 right oblique strain. He dealt with an oblique strain last year but only missed three days. He'll be eligible to return from the DL May 21. C Robinson Chirinos, who was recalled to take Pierzynski's roster spot, can also play several infield spots if needed.

Fantasy Tip: Oblique strains are very tricky and can take plenty of time to come back from, so don't automatically Pierzynski to be ready on May 21. Chirinos could see occasional playing time behind Geovany Soto, but not enough to make him valuable in deep mixed formats.

Rangers | A.J. Pierzynski still out

Wed, 08 May 2013 12:30:37 -0700

Texas Rangers C A.J. Pierzynski (oblique) won't play Wednesday, May 8, due to a strained oblique muscle in his right rib cage. Pierzynski has missed five of the team's last nine games, but he doesn't think he needs a disabled list stint. C Geovany Soto is starting in his place.

Fantasy Tip: Oblique injuries are very tricky and can resurface if they aren't rested properly. Don't be surprised if Pierzynski misses more time or needs to go on the DL. Soto would obviously be the beneficiary, but his lack of plate skills makes him attractive only in two-catcher leagues or AL-only universes.

Tue, 07 May 2013 16:10:55 -0700

Rangers | Yu Darvish to get personal C

Fri, 11 Jan 2013 20:09:44 -0800

Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington indicated Friday, Jan. 11, that his plan is to have C Geovany Soto catch most of the starts for SP Yu Darvish this season. "I just think they have a good communication and a good relationship. I think Soto was in Darvish's head to the point that whatever Darvish felt like he wanted to do, Soto was doing it," Washington said of their rapport down the stretch last season.

Fantasy Tip: Soto might see another start sometime during the week, or perhaps occasionally as the designated hitter. However, with about 10-15 at-bats per week, he would only be worth a look in the deepest of AL-only fantasy leagues unless C A.J. Pierzynski is forced to the shelf due to injury.

Rangers | Chances slim Mike Napoli returns

Wed, 02 Jan 2013 18:16:41 -0800

Free-agent C Mike Napoli (Rangers) (hip) reached an agreement with the Boston Red Sox Dec. 3, but the deal is still not official. A physical examination revealed a problem with one of his hips, source says, and the two sides have yet to find common ground on that issue. The Texas Rangers are unlikely to bring Napoli back, as they have already added a pair of free-agent Cs A.J. Pierzynski and Geovany Soto.
