Angels | Geovany Soto expects to be back soon

Tue, 19 Jul 2016 17:14:47 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Geovany Soto (knee) expects to activated from the 15-day disabled list when he is first eligible. An MRI on Soto's knee showed inflammation but no structural damage.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to monitor the situation to see if Soto suffers any setback before he is able to return. He is hitting .284 with three home runs and eight RBI this season and is a decent option in two-catcher leagues when he plays again.

Angels | Geovany Soto back to DL

Mon, 18 Jul 2016 16:00:33 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Geovany Soto (knee) was put on the 15-day disabled list with left knee inflammation Monday, July 18. C Juan Graterol was recalled from the minors in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Soto's knee is bothering him again. He's hit well when healthy for the Angels (.284-3-8), but he hasn't been able to stay on the field. Jett Bandy should continue to see the majority of starts behind the plate and is hitting .264 with two long balls and 12 RBI. He's a viable candidate for a roster spot in two-catcher and AL-only leagues. Ignore Graterol everywhere.

Angels | Geovany Soto scratched

Sun, 17 Jul 2016 11:37:55 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Geovany Soto (undisclosed) was scratched from the starting lineup Sunday, July 17, because of an undisclosed reason. C Jett Bandy will start at catcher.

Fantasy Tip: Bandy has at least one hit in four of his last five games but has only one RBI this month. Bandy can be considered in two-catcher leagues but does not have value in most mixed leagues.

Angels | Three sitting out for Angels

Sun, 17 Jul 2016 10:56:53 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Daniel Nava, 2B Johnny Giavotella and C Jett Bandy are not in the starting lineup against Chicago White Sox SP Jacob Turner Sunday, July 17. C Geovany Soto will start at catcher and is batting sixth. 2B Gregorio Petit will start at second base and is batting eighth. OF Todd Cunningham will start in left field and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Soto has gone 2-for-7 since returning from the disabled list and should be a decent option in two-catcher leagues. Soto has gone 3-for-11 in his limited playing time this month, but owners should be able to find better options. Cunningham is hitting only .067 this season and should be avoided in all leagues.

Angels | Several Halos regulars resting Sunday

Sun, 10 Jul 2016 07:42:04 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Daniel Nava, 2B Johnny Giavotella and C Jett Bandy are not in the starting lineup against Baltimore Orioles SP Chris Tillman Sunday, July 10. INF Jefry Marte will bat fifth and play first base, 1B/OF Ji-Man Choi will start in left field and hit sixth, C Geovany Soto will start behind the plate and bat eighth and INF Gregorio Petit will hit ninth and play second base.

Fantasy Tip: Soto is making his first appearance since being activated from the disabled list due to a torn meniscus in his right knee and should be avoided in his first game back. Marte and Choi are both batting well below the Mendoza line this season and are not worthy of consideration for daily fantasy lineups, while Petit is nothing more than a source of emergency cap relief.

Angels | Geovany Soto activated from DL

Fri, 08 Jul 2016 18:25:50 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Geovany Soto (knee) was activated from the 15-day disabled list Saturday, July 8. C Carlos Perez was sent down to Class AAA Salt Lake in the corresponding roster move. C Jett Bandy sticks around to serve as the backup to Soto.

Fantasy Tip: Soto is ready for the second half, and is a solid No. 2 receiver in AL-only fantasy formats and some deeper mixed leagues. He gives the Angels decent offense from the catcher spot, something that they sorely lacked with Perez handling most of the starts in his stead.

Fri, 08 Jul 2016 14:00:35 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Geovany Soto (knee) could be activated from the disabled list Saturday, July 8, as he is en route to joining the team for their series against the Baltimore Orioles.

Fantasy Tip: Soto owns a .283/.338/.483 slash line, three home runs and seven RBI over 67 plate appearances and is a low-end option in cavernous mixed, two-catcher and AL-only leagues. Check back for an update on his status before locking him into lineups this weekend.

Angels | Geovany Soto unlikely back before break

Wed, 06 Jul 2016 15:32:31 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Geovany Soto (knee) is unlikely to return from the disabled list before the All-Star break. He was scheduled to catch for Class AAA Salt Lake Wednesday, July 6, and then be re-evaluated.

Fantasy Tip: Soto performed well as the Halos' backup catcher before his injury, hitting .283 with three homers and seven RBI in 60 at-bats. Carlos Perez has picked it up offensively, but Soto could see decent playing time in the second half. However, he hasn't hit double-digit home runs since 2011 and would primarily be an asset in two-catcher and AL-only universes.

Angels | Geovany Soto could be out through break

Mon, 04 Jul 2016 13:47:15 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Geovany Soto (knee) will not rejoin the team during the series against the Tampa Bay Rays Tuesday, July 6, according to manager Mike Scioscia. Scioscia noted Soto's knee is still stiff and the catcher might not return until after the All-Star break.

Fantasy Tip: Soto is a low-end option in cavernous mixed, two-catcher and AL-only leagues, but he was off to a nice start before the injury with a .283/.338/.483 slash line, three home runs and seven RBI over 67 plate appearances. Stay tuned for updates.

Angels | Geovany Soto could return Tuesday

Fri, 01 Jul 2016 15:29:12 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Geovany Soto (knee) is scheduled to play a total of four rehab games, and he can be activated from the disabled list Tuesday, July 5.

Fantasy Tip: The Angels haven't gotten much production from their backstops this season, but Soto had a respectable .283/.338/.483 slash line with three home runs and seven RBI before his injury. One has to think he'll see at least a share of playing time when he returns, pushing either Carlos Perez or Jett Bandy to the minors.
