Sat, 11 May 2013 10:30:48 -0700 In four games since coming off the disabled list, Atlanta Braves C Brian McCann is 5-for-16 (.313) with two home runs and seven RBIs.
Mon, 06 May 2013 14:55:28 -0700 Atlanta Braves C Evan Gattis, who is starting in left field Monday, May 6, will split time in the outfield, at catcher and at first base now that C Brian McCann (shoulder) is back from the disabled list. However, with McCann making $12 million this year and set to become a free agent after this season, it's believed that McCann won't be brought back in 2014 and Gattis will become the team's primary catcher. Gattis played left field in winter ball, which allows OF Justin Upton to move to right field at least while OF Jason Heyward (appendix) is out. Fantasy Tip: Gattis should still be worth hanging onto in deep mixed leagues since he should be playing at least three or four times a week until Heyward returns. After that, playing time will likely be even harder to come by for Gattis. If less PT affects Gattis' performance, only then would it be reasonable to drop Gattis in deep mixed formats.
Sun, 05 May 2013 20:30:57 -0700 Atlanta Braves C Brian McCann (shoulder) will come off the 15-day disabled list Monday, May 6. He was 8-for-23 with a double, four home runs and nine RBI in seven minor-league rehab games between Class A Rome and Triple-A Gwinnett. Fantasy Tip: It appears safe to activate McCann in all fantasy leagues. He certainly did not show any rust at the plate in his rehab assignment. While major league pitching is better quality, McCann should still be worth using.
Fri, 03 May 2013 15:03:17 -0700 Atlanta Braves C Brian McCann (shoulder) will serve as the designated hitter with Triple-A Gwinnett Friday, May 3, catch Saturday, May 4, and is expected to return from the disabled list Monday, May 6. Fantasy Tip: This has been expected for a while now. If for some reason McCann is still on your waiver wire, scoop him up immediately. It'll be interesting to see how the playing time shakes out for Evan Gattis upon McCann's return, or if they'll keep three catchers on roster.
Tue, 30 Apr 2013 14:08:52 -0700 Atlanta Braves C Brian McCann (shoulder) feels that he'll be able to return for the series against the Cincinnati Reds next week. Fantasy Tip: Make plans to have McCann activated when he returns from the disabled list. When he returns, if Evan Gattis remains on the major league roster, he'll see his playing time decrease substantially. Hang onto him until Atlanta decides what they'll do, though.
Fri, 26 Apr 2013 06:55:14 -0700 Atlanta Braves C Brian McCann (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment at Class A Rome Friday, April 26. Fantasy Tip: McCann will need 2-3 weeks of at-bats before returning, but don't be surprised if the team uses much of the 30 days before activating McCann. Evan Gattis has performed extremely well in McCann's absence, and Gattis has probably eaten into some of McCann's playing time when he returns. McCann is in a contract year, but he's going to have to mash to keep Gattis off the field.
Mon, 22 Apr 2013 12:23:24 -0700 Atlanta Braves C Brian McCann (shoulder) is gaining arm strength and will catch five innings in extended spring training Tuesday, April 23. He's expected to start a rehab assignment later this week. Fantasy Tip: The Braves are expected to have McCann use up the full time on a minor league rehab assignment to avoid having to make a decision on whether they'll carry three catches when he returns. They also would prefer to make sure McCann is 100 percent healthy. If Evan Gattis is still hot by then, it's hard to imagine they'll send him down.
Wed, 17 Apr 2013 15:00:20 -0700 Atlanta Braves C Brian McCann (shoulder, wrist) will have his preparation for a rehab assignment delayed a day or two due to a sore right wrist, which is unrelated to his surgery last year. McCann has been hitting but not running or catching in extended spring games. No structural problems were detected after he was examined by a specialist. If McCann doesn't have any more setbacks, he could start playing in extended spring training by the end of the week. There is no timetable for when he will rejoin the major league team. Fantasy Tip: This new injury shouldn't affect McCann's timetable at all. The injury is likely the result of increased activity recently. Expect him to return to Atlanta in early to mid-May, but Fredi Gonzalez will rest him more than usual in the early going, so be prepared.
Wed, 17 Apr 2013 10:38:05 -0700 Updating a previous report, Atlanta Braves C Brian McCann (shoulder, wrist) is dealing with wrist tenderness that has been described as minor. He's expected to catch in an extended spring training game on Thursday, April 18, or Friday, April 19. Fantasy Tip: Phew. Sounds like the wrist thing is no big deal, and the Braves were playing it safe. They can afford to do so with the way C Evan Gattis has performed.
Wed, 17 Apr 2013 10:29:41 -0700 Atlanta Braves C Brian McCann (shoulder, wrist) returned to Atlanta for an examination because he's been experiencing tenderness in his wrist. On Tuesday, April 16, he returned to Orlando, where he's been rehabbing from shoulder surgery. GM Frank Wren said the wrist issue is unrelated to McCann's shoulder, but the GM is unsure when the catcher will catch in a game as part of his rehab. Fantasy Tip: It's unclear how serious this is, but those who drafted McCann hoping for a rebound are holding their breath, just a bit. Stay tuned.
