Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Friday, Jan. 27, that he is fine with re-signing a one-year contract. "It makes it nice for everybody. If I decide that's enough or they decide they don't want me, there's no strings attached," Leyland said.

Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland won his 500th game with the club Friday, Sept. 2, against the Chicago White Sox. He joined Sparky Anderson (1,331), Hughie Jennings (1,131), Bucky Harris (516) and Steve O'Neill (509) as 500-game winners for Detroit.

The Detroit Tigers extended the contracts of general manager Dave Dombrowski and manager Jim Leyland Monday, Aug. 8. Dombrowski agreed to a four-year contract extension through the 2015 season, and Leyland reached an agreement that extends him through the 2012 season. Financial terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland is taking a very cautious approach with C Alex Avila and plans to make sure Avila gets plenty of rest in the second half. "If we're not careful, we'll play him into the ground, trust me," Leyland said. "He was getting tired toward the end of the first half. I know he won't admit that and that he doesn't think he is, and that's a great thing ... but if I don't watch him, I'll play him into the ground if I'm not careful."
