The Detroit Tigers scratched 1B Brad Eldred Monday, June 18, at Triple-A Toledo, and manager Phil Nevin confirmed he is healthy, but would not comment on the reason. An earlier report had Japanese League team Hiroshima Carp interested in his services. He was seen hugging teammates and saying goodbye after the game Monday. The Tigers signed free-agent INF Jeff Baisley (Dodgers) and assigned him to Toledo.

The Detroit Tigers will use 1B Brad Eldred in the lineup as their primary designated hitter. "I'm going to run him in there," manager Jim Leyland said Thursday, April 26. "He's been one of the hottest hitters in baseball, in the minor leagues. I'm DH-ing him and I'm going to put him in that spot. How long depends on how he does." Eldred batted .388 with 13 homers and 35 RBIs in just 20 games for Triple-A Toledo, and five of those homers and 10 RBIs came in the past three games.
