Mariners | Nelson Cruz homers Friday

Fri, 18 Mar 2016 17:55:07 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Nelson Cruz hit his first home run of the spring against the Texas Rangers Friday, March 18, after notching his first hit two days prior. He is batting just .095 through 19 at-bats in Cactus League play.

Fantasy Tip: Cruz was slowed by minor knee issues at the start of spring training camp but those are now in his rearview mirror. He had 44 home runs and 93 RBIs for Seattle in 2015 but the 36-year-old could see those numbers decline this year. Cruz should be viewed as a low-end OF1 or high-end OF2 at this stage of his career.

Seattle Mariners OF Nelson Cruz (knee) made his first appearance of the spring in the field Wednesday, March 9.

Mariners | Nelson Cruz feels normal

Thu, 03 Mar 2016 10:08:26 -0800

Seattle Mariners OF Nelson Cruz (knee) said his knee feels normal after having left knee issues the first few days of camp. He is scheduled to do baserunning drills to test his knee Thursday, March 3. Seattle is being careful with Cruz, and he won't travel to the spring game against the Milwaukee Brewers Friday, March 4, but his goal is to play Saturday, March 5.

Fantasy Tip: Cruz has a history of lower-body injuries, and at age 35 that's much more of a concern. He's still drafted as a first fantasy outfielder, but he's a bust candidate considering his power could regress at Safeco Field in his second season there.

Mariners | Nelson Cruz has sore knee

Tue, 01 Mar 2016 14:33:16 -0800

Updating a previous report, Seattle Mariners OF Nelson Cruz (knee) has a sore left knee that was "a little tender," and he won't play Wednesday, March 2, according to manager Scott Servais. However, Cruz is expected to play a few days later. "I don't know exactly what it was. I was working out and my calf started getting tight and then next thing I know my knee was bugging me a little bit," Cruz said. The Mariners are being careful with Cruz, but they don't see it as anything serious.

Fantasy Tip: Injury concerns and a declining power profile make Cruz a bust headliner in 2016. He's now 36, and a fortunate HR/FB rate propped up his power at Safeco Field. The power is there, but he's not an elite outfielder anymore.

Mariners | Nelson Cruz likely out Wednesday

Tue, 01 Mar 2016 08:06:59 -0800

Seattle Mariners OF Nelson Cruz (leg) is unlikely to play in the spring opener Wednesday, March 2, due to leg soreness. He's expected to be ready by the weekend.

Fantasy Tip: Cruz had a huge .302-44-93 season last year, but it shouldn't be ignored that he turns 36 in July. He's still an OF1 option, but the risks are starting to creep up.

Mariners | More DH time for Nelson Cruz

Wed, 24 Feb 2016 10:08:37 -0800

Seattle Mariners OF Nelson Cruz is expected to spend more time as the designated hitter in 2016, but manager Scott Servais declined to give a targeted split for Cruz between DH and right field. "The big thing for us is to have him in the lineup for 155 to 160 games," Servais said. "That's the goal. Is there a set number (of games in right field or DH)? No there is not." Cruz had 31 homer and 59 RBI in 346 plate appearances in his 80 games in right field last year but had only 13 home runs and 34 RBI as the DH in 309 plate appearances.

Fantasy Tip: Cruz will be 36 this year, which will scare many owners away. You should also be concerned with a drop in his fly-ball and contact rates last season, despite the fact he hit 17 of his 44 homers at hitter-friendly Safeco Field. Cruz also made fewer hard contact last year. Don't pay for a repeat of 40 homers in 2016.
