Hawksworth underwent what should have been relatively minor arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow Jan. 11 to remove a bone spur and scar tissue. But a post-surgical infection developed that required a second cleansing procedure and powerful antibiotics, setting back his recovery. Hawksworth said he does not know of a timetable for throwing off a mound or in a game. He is expected to remain in Arizona for extended spring training.

While the team said he won't be ready for opening day, there was no timetable given for when he might be available. Hawksworth had a minor surgery during the offseason to clean scar tissue and shave down a bone spur, and he had a second surgery this week to clean up an infection that resulted from the first procedure.
