The Baltimore Orioles had discussions at the winter meetings about trading for Seattle Mariners RP Brandon League. The team also had talks regarding SP Jason Vargas. SP Jeremy Guthrie and 3B Mark Reynolds were brought up in the trade discussions, but the talks didn't go very far.

Some within the industry think the Seattle Mariners could be persuaded to trade RP Brandon League, and several teams have contacted Seattle to show interest in the closer. The Cincinnati Reds, Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are still looking for a closer. The Los Angeles Dodgers had talks about League during the winter meetings, but their interest doesn't seem serious.

Seattle Mariners manager Eric Wedge said he doesn't think RP Brandon League is quite ready for multi-inning saves. "I think we'll probably stay as-is right now just because this is his first full year of closing. This is a guy who has been a multiple-inning guy out of the bullpen his entire career. So, let's take it in stages. I think that right now - I'm not saying it's beyond the realm of possibility - but I think right now it's better to keep him in that ninth-inning role."
