The Houston Astros optioned P Henry Villar to Triple-A Round Rock and reassigned SP Gustavo Chacin, P Ross Wolf, P Jose Valdez, C Carlos Corporan, 2B Anderson Hernandez, IF Oswaldo Navarro, OF J.B. Shuck and SS Tommy Manzella to minor league camp, the Houston Chronicle's Steve Campbell reports. They also designated SP Ryan Rowland-Smith for assignment.

Houston Astros Ps Fernando Abad, Ryan Rowland-Smith and Gustavo Chacin are competing for left-handed bullpen slots, according to Zachary Levine of the Houston Chronicle. It's unknown exactly how many slots remain, but Levine does speculate that Abad is the favorite.

Houston Astros RP Fernando Abad is a favorite to be the left-handed specialist in the bullpen this year, according to MLB.com's Brian McTaggart. The team is also not ruling Abad out for a rotation spot. RPs Sergio Escalona, Wesley Wright and Gustavo Chacin will also compete for a spot in the bullpen.

The Houston Astros re-signed SP Gustavo Chacin to a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training Wednesday, Dec. 22, according to the Houston Chronicle's Joseph Duarte. Chacin is expected to compete for the left-handed situation role in the bullpen.
