Second-year pro Matt Stewart is working in Henri Crockett's old strongside linebacker spot, and Keion Carpenter and Keith Lyle are splitting time at No. 1 free safety in place of departed Ronnie Bradford. Patrick Kerney is at weakside linebacker rather than end, and the inside linebackers are Keith Brooking and Mark Simoneau. Backing them up are Chris Draft, who started on the weakside in the 4-3 last year, and free agent addition John Holocek.

They also had an impressive visit Monday with free agent LB Bernardo Harris (Packers). They have told the agents for each player that they will sign the first player that agrees to their contract terms. "We'd like to be able to sign Crockett or Harris," coach Mike Tice said. "But now that we've got the guy we really wanted, we're not going to chase anyone out of our financial realm. We'd love to have either one."

Updating previous reports, Bill Williamson reports for the Pioneer Press that the Minnesota Vikings are closing in on signing free agent LB Henri Crockett (Falcons). The two sides continued negotiations over the weekend and will continue to talk Monday. Because Crockett can play weak-side and middle linebacker, he is the team's top free agent choice at the position.
