Saints | Howard to Be Named Franchise Player Again?

Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports the New Orleans Saints are likely to put a franchise tag on DE Willie Howard for the second consecutive year, with no intentions of signing him to a long-term deal. He will reportedly make $7.8 million in 2005, a 20 percent increase over his "franchise" qualifying offer from a year ago.

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports Minnesota Vikings DL Willie Howard (leg) will almost certainly be forced to retirement. As reported, he'll likely be released this summer. He did not take a snap during 2002 and is still trying to recover from a torn ACL in his right leg, sprained MCL and fractured fibula.

Vikings | Howard May Not Play in 2003

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports Minnesota Vikings DL Willie Howard (leg) will likely be released later this summer. Howard met with head coach Mike Tice on Tuesday, June 3, morning, and the two agreed Howard has been unable to regain his quickness following a devastating right leg injury he suffered in December, 2001. Howard played during the 2002 preseason but spent the season on injured reserve. He did not participate in the Vikings' May minicamp.

Bill Williamson, of the Pioneer Press, reports the Minnesota Vikings are concerned about DL Willie Howard (leg) and are not sure if he’ll be healthy enough to be in their plans in 2003. Head coach Mike Tice went as far as saying the team doesn’t know if he’ll ever have the lateral movement necessary to play. Tice said Howard is working hard on the racquetball court and they’ll just have to wait and see.
