Los Angeles Dodgers RP J.P. Howell recorded the final out in a 4-3 win over the New York Mets Saturday, July 4, to log his first save of the season.
Fantasy Tip: Closer Kenley Jansen had appeared in seven of the previous 10 games and had allowed a run in three straight, so it was likely just a night off due to the heavy workload. Jansen remains an elite fantasy closer, and he owns a 1.93 ERA and has 32 strikeouts in 18 2/3 innings.

Los Angeles Dodgers RP J.P. Howell (groin) is expecting to be back in action in a few days after suffering from tightness in his left groin. Manager Don Mattingly said Howell deals with the problem every spring, and he's being limited as a precaution.
Fantasy Tip: With Kenley Jansen to miss at least the first month of the season, Howell could factor into closing situations early in the season, especially with Joel Peralta also nicked up in spring training. However, Howell isn't guaranteed to see save chances, so he's, at best, an end-game pick for saves speculators in deep mixed leagues.

Updating a previous report, Los Angeles Dodgers RP Kenley Jansen (foot) will be on crutches for about 10 days and in a protective boot for another three to four weeks after having a growth removed from one of the bones in his foot. The Dodgers have no obvious replacement at closer for Jansen, with RP Brandon League maybe being the likeliest candidate because of his 74 career saves. RP J.P. Howell has 21 career saves, and RP Joel Peralta could also be an option.
Fantasy Tip: Jensen, in a best-case scenario, will probably be ready in early May. That means the Dodgers have to fill the closer situation for a month without him. Based on Peralta's numbers with the Tampa Bay Rays the past several seasons, he seems like the best bet to handle most of the opportunities if the Dodgers don't go outside the organization for help. If you're a Jansen owner, the best course of action would be to pick up Peralta or Howell and sit on Jansen for the first month.

Los Angeles Dodgers RP J.P. Howell might be in line for a bigger role with RP Kenley Jansen (foot) sidelined eight to 12 weeks after surgery on his left foot.
Fantasy Tip: Howell has plenty of experience, but a ninth-inning job is speculation at this point. He might also be used with Brandon League and Joel Peralta in a closer-by-committee approach, or the team could look outside of the organization for help.

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Carlos Frias became the first pitcher in the modern era to allow 10 hits while recording fewer than three outs in a game. The Dodgers are considering a "bullpen" game the next time SP Hyun-Jin Ryu's (shoulder) place in the rotation comes up, and that could come against the Chicago Cubs Sunday, Sep. 21, with RPs Paco Rodriguez or J.P. Howell starting. Frias' ERA went from 3.91 to 6.58 in the outing.
