Kansas City Royals SP Jason Vargas (appendix) threw from 110 feet Saturday, July 19, and probably will throw again Monday, July 21, and Tuesday, July 22, according to manager Ned Yost. Yost said he is not sure if Vargas will need to go on a rehab assignment before rejoining the team.

The Kansas City Royals have placed SP Jason Vargas (appendix) on the 15-day disabled list because of an appendectomy. The team also recalled RP Louis Coleman from Triple-A Omaha.

Kansas City Royals general manager Dayton Moore said SPs James Shields, Jason Vargas, Jeremy Guthrie and Bruce Chen are penciled into the rotation to start the year. Moore suggested that SP Yordano Ventura may have a leg up on the competition for the fifth and final rotation spot this spring. Moore also said they won't hesitate to use Ventura in the bullpen "if that's how it unfolds." "We think he's ready for the major leagues. Certainly spring training will help validate that opinion," Moore said, adding, "We expect him to be one of our 12 pitchers when we break camp unless something unforeseen happens." Ps Luke Hochevar, Wade Davis, Danny Duffy and Chris Dwyer are all a notch behind Ventura heading into spring training.

Free-agent SP Matt Garza (Rangers) is open to returning to the Minnesota Twins, according to a person with knowledge of the negotiations. The Twins have met with Garza's representatives this week during the GM meetings but have yet to make an offer. Minnesota hasn't made offers to free-agent SPs Phil Hughes (Yankees), Jason Vargas (Angels), Bronson Arroyo (Reds) or Ubaldo Jimenez (Indians), either.
