The Carolina Panthers experimented with a 3-4 defensive scheme on three plays against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 6. Head coach Ron Rivera ran a 3-4 scheme while with the San Diego Chargers last year. By next year, it appears that the team is hoping to have a multi-front defense.

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera expressed concerned over the team's defense after the first unit surrendered 269 yards and 24 points in the first half alone Thursday, Aug. 25, versus the Cincinnati Bengals. "I'm very concerned," Rivera said of the defense. "I think the biggest thing is looking at where we are in terms of who's on the field. We are playing some young guys and they need to get some experience very quickly. Our two starting tackles (DL Sione Fua and DL Terrell McClain) are both rookies and at times they played like rookies and at times they played like veterans. They are a little bit away but we're going to live and die with these situations."

Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith said he came away impressed after meeting with head coach Ron Rivera. "When I met Ron I would say they maybe sold him short. He's great, a great guy," Smith said. "My first meeting with him was pretty good, it was outstanding. I walked away very impressed."

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said Sunday, March 20, at the NFL owners meetings the team could look at trading the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft in order to acquire additional draft picks, according to Joseph Person, of the Charlotte Observer. "Anything's possible," Rivera said. "We've got to finish the process and see where it all fits."

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said Sunday, March 20, at the NFL owners meetings the team is simply not looking at quarterback prospects with the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft, according to Joseph Person, of the Charlotte Observer. Rivera added the Panthers have zeroed in on about eight prospects. He said three of those targets are quarterbacks – Auburn QB Cam Newton, Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert and Arkansas QB Ryan Mallett – but not all.

The Carolina Panthers will hold a private workout for Auburn QB Cam Newton next week, according to Darin Gantt, of the Rock Hill Herald. The Panthers, who own the first pick in the NFL Draft, have admitted Newton is part of a group of players they're considering with that pick. Head coach Ron Rivera said he also expects to have Newton come to Charlotte to meet with team officials before the draft. Rivera talked at the NFL Scouting Combine about the need for a franchise quarterback.

Auburn athletic department officials are anticipating a crowd of potentially over 125 NFL coaches and pro personnel types for the school's Pro Day Tuesday, March 8, according to Gil Brandt, of NFL.com. Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera and Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis were seen in attendance. The headliners of Auburn's Pro Day will include QB Cam Newton and DL Nick Fairley; however, 22 players in all will be measured, tested and run through drills.

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said WR Steve Smith remains a member of the team for the time being and the two will sit down and talk, according to Brad Biggs, of NationalFootballPost.com. However, Rivera added he will do whatever is best for the team. "Steve's a Carolina Panther," Rivera said when asked what the latest with the veteran wide receivers is. "That's a situation where as we go further on we'll address. We'll talk and he knows how I feel about things. My biggest thing is let us put it all together and see how it works, see if it's something that can work for all of us. That's probably the most important thing. But we have to do what's best for the Carolina Panthers."
