Bears | Smith discusses Rivera Tue, 20 Feb 2007 07:23:39 -0800 Larry Mayer, of ChicagoBears.com, reports Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith discussed the departure of former defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, who was not offered a contract extension after serving three seasons with the team. "I really appreciate the job Ron did for us for three years and I'm excited about his future going in a different direction," head coach Lovie Smith said. "But it's my job to put us in the best situation to move forward and I think this will give both of us a chance to go in the direction we'd like to. Ron had a contract. I don't see it as a firing or anything like that. His contract expired and he wants to go in one direction and I'd like to go in one, no more than that." As reported, the Bears are expected to promote linebackers coach and assistant head coach Bob Babich to defensive coordinator this year.

A source close to the Chicago Bears said that Rivera is on his way to Dallas and is intending to interview with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones Tuesday afternoon. Jones said he would not name a new head coach until Wednesday, Feb. 7, at the earliest.
