Chargers | Will keep 3-4 defensive scheme
Mon, 18 May 2009 08:45:23 -0700

Kevin Acee, of the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports the San Diego Chargers will keep the 3-4 as their base defense in 2009. Defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, however, is an aficionado of the 4-3 defensive scheme and will blend some of his past into the team's defense. "I took some of the things I've done in the past and tried to incorporate it so it fit a 3-4 defense," Rivera said. "I didn't want to change the integrity of the defense. It's not something they haven't done. But it's a refinement of what they've done."

Bears | Smith discusses Rivera
Tue, 20 Feb 2007 07:23:39 -0800

Larry Mayer, of ChicagoBears.com, reports Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith discussed the departure of former defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, who was not offered a contract extension after serving three seasons with the team. "I really appreciate the job Ron did for us for three years and I'm excited about his future going in a different direction," head coach Lovie Smith said. "But it's my job to put us in the best situation to move forward and I think this will give both of us a chance to go in the direction we'd like to. Ron had a contract. I don't see it as a firing or anything like that. His contract expired and he wants to go in one direction and I'd like to go in one, no more than that." As reported, the Bears are expected to promote linebackers coach and assistant head coach Bob Babich to defensive coordinator this year.

Mon, 19 Feb 2007 11:47:12 -0800

Jay Glazer, of FOXSports.com, reports the Chicago Bears have opted not to renew the contract of defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, leaving one of the top defensive minds in the game without a job. The team wanted to pursue a long-term plan for the position due to Rivera's candidacy for numerous head coaching positions and head coach Lovie Smith felt the need to move in a different direction sooner rather than later. Smith will likely promote linebackers coach Bob Babich to the newly-vacated defensive coordinator position.

Fri, 09 Feb 2007 07:55:37 -0800

Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera appears likely to return to the club next season after being turned down for the head coaching job with the Dallas Cowboys. While Rivera will need a new contract from the team, he discussed the upcoming evaluation of personnel heading into the offseason. ''I want to get a real good feel for what our shortcomings were and how to correct them,'' said Rivera, who stated he would review the Super Bowl tape. ''This last season, coming into this year, there were some things in the defensive backfield we needed to shore up, some technique things. Charles Tillman had the type of year that he should have gone to the Pro Bowl."
