Chargers | Will keep 3-4 defensive scheme

Defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, however, is an aficionado of the 4-3 defensive scheme and will blend some of his past into the team's defense. "I took some of the things I've done in the past and tried to incorporate it so it fit a 3-4 defense," Rivera said. "I didn't want to change the integrity of the defense. It's not something they haven't done. But it's a refinement of what they've done."

"I really appreciate the job Ron did for us for three years and I'm excited about his future going in a different direction," head coach Lovie Smith said. "But it's my job to put us in the best situation to move forward and I think this will give both of us a chance to go in the direction we'd like to. Ron had a contract. I don't see it as a firing or anything like that. His contract expired and he wants to go in one direction and I'd like to go in one, no more than that." As reported, the Bears are expected to promote linebackers coach and assistant head coach Bob Babich to defensive coordinator this year.

While Rivera will need a new contract from the team, he discussed the upcoming evaluation of personnel heading into the offseason. ''I want to get a real good feel for what our shortcomings were and how to correct them,'' said Rivera, who stated he would review the Super Bowl tape. Tue, 06 Feb 2007 09:08:36 -0800 Updating previous reports, Ed Werder, of ESPN.com, reports the Dallas Cowboys requested and received permission from the Chicago Bears Tuesday morning, Feb. 6, to interview defensive coordinator Ron Rivera in regard to their head coaching vacancy, according to unidentified sources. A source close to the Chicago Bears said that Rivera is on his way to Dallas and is intending to interview with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones Tuesday afternoon. Jones said he would not name a new head coach until Wednesday, Feb. 7, at the earliest.
