Pirates | Jason Rogers, Michael Morse to compete

Fri, 18 Dec 2015 08:45:59 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates 1Bs Jason Rogers and Michael Morse will compete for playing time at first base next season. Rogers had 22 starts with the Milwaukee Brewers last year at first base.

Fantasy Tip: Rogers hit .296 (45-for-152) with four home runs and 16 RBI in just 86 games for Milwaukee last year. With more playing time, Rogers' average will surely come down, but he could approach 15 home runs. He's more contact-inclined than Morse, who struggled with a .231 average and just five homers with two teams in 2015. Both first basemen are merely corner infield depth in deep mixed and NL-only universes.

Pirates | Pedro Alvarez out against LHP

Sat, 03 Oct 2015 13:21:08 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Pedro Alvarez is out of the lineup Saturday, Oct. 3, with 1B Michael Morse hitting sixth.

Fantasy Tip: Morse ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) takes on lefty Brandon Finnegan, but he hasn't stood out against lefties this year. There are better options on FantasyScore.

Pirates | Neil Walker, Pedro Alvarez out against lefty

Wed, 30 Sep 2015 14:43:25 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 2B Neil Walker and 1B Pedro Alvarez are not in the lineup for Game 2 of a doubleheader against St. Louis Cardinals left-handed SP Tyler Lyons Wednesday, Sept. 30. 3B Josh Harrison is starting at second base and hitting leadoff, while 1B Michael Morse is at first base and is batting sixth.

Fantasy Tip: Harrison ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) has a triple slash line of .293/.355/.374 against lefties this year and has been hot in September. He makes for a great value pick tonight against the lefty Lyon. Morse ($3,300, 6.6% of cap), on the other hand, hasn't done much all year and is strictly a lotto ticket as a deep sleeper.

Pirates | Pedro Alvarez, Neil Walker sitting out

Fri, 25 Sep 2015 10:26:47 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Pedro Alvarez and 2B Neil Walker are not in the lineup against Chicago Cubs left-handed SP Jon Lester Friday, Sept. 25. 1B Michael Morse is starting at first base and batting sixth, while 3B Josh Harrison is starting at the keystone and hitting seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Despite having plenty of power, Morse ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) is having a rough year and remains a low-end first base option. Harrison ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) has hit well in September and is worth considering because of his .305/.362/.389 slash line against lefties this year.

Pirates | Pedro Alvarez on bench Tuesday

Tue, 22 Sep 2015 15:44:52 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Pedro Alvarez is not in the lineup against Colorado Rockies left-handed SP Chris Rusin Tuesday, Sept. 22. 1B Michael Morse is starting at first base and is batting seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Morse ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) is an all-or-nothing gamble on FantasyScore but will be taking hacks in a great hitting environment at Coors Field. The downside: He is batting .228 (13-for-57) with just one of his five home runs this year against lefties.

Pirates | Pedro Alvarez takes a seat

Sat, 19 Sep 2015 14:57:54 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Pedro Alvarez is out of the lineup Saturday, Sept. 19, with OF Michael Morse hitting sixth against left-handed Los Angeles Dodgers SP Clayton Kershaw.

Fantasy Tip: Morse ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) doesn't have good numbers against lefties and is 2-for-9 (.222) lifetime against Kershaw. There's not much there to warrant a FantasyScore start.

Pirates | Pedro Alvarez sitting vs. Cubbies

Tue, 15 Sep 2015 15:08:04 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Pedro Alvarez is not in the lineup against Chicago Cubs left-handed SP Jon Lester for Game 2 of a doubleheader Tuesday, Sept. 15. 1B Michael Morse is starting at first base and is batting sixth.

Fantasy Tip: Things have been different for Morse ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) since he joined the Bucs; he's hitting .326 (14-for-43) with a home run and four RBI. Against Lester and the Cubs, though, he's a weaker first base commodity Tuesday night.

Pirates | Michael Morse hits grand slam

Sat, 12 Sep 2015 19:34:05 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Michael Morse hit a pinch-hit grand slam in a 10-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers Saturday, Sept. 12.

Fantasy Tip: It was the first homer for Morse ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) since joining the Pirates, and he has been relegated to a platoon player with little value at FantasyScore.

Pirates | Pedro Alvarez out of lineup

Sat, 05 Sep 2015 11:03:56 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Pedro Alvarez is not in the starting lineup against St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia Saturday, Sept. 5. 1B Michael Morse is in the starting lineup, batting sixth.

Fantasy Tip: For FantasyScore owners searching for an inexpensive first baseman, Morse ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) has an ideal matchup tonight. He is 4-for-7 over the past week and is 5-for-12 in his career against Garcia, with two doubles and a solo home run.

Pirates | Pedro Alvarez not playing Sunday

Sun, 30 Aug 2015 08:22:36 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Pedro Alvarez is not in the starting lineup against Colorado Rockies SP Jorge De La Rosa Sunday, Aug. 30. 1B Michael Morse will start at first base and is batting sixth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez ($4,800, 9.6% of cap) usually sits against left-handed pitchers, so he is receiving a day off. Morse ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) is hitting .323 in limited playing time this month but has not recorded an RBI since July 21, so owners may want to look at other options.
