Mets | NYM won't have full-time closer

Sat, 27 Jan 2018 05:28:01 -0800

The New York Mets are expected to use a closer-by-committee approach at the beginning of the regular season, with RHPs Jeurys Familia, A.J. Ramos, Anthony Swarzak and LHP Jerry Blevins likely to see save opportunities, according to manager Mickey Callaway. Familia could make several multiple-inning appearances during spring training in order to prepare for games during the season where he'll be asked to record more than three outs.

Mets | Jerry Blevins has forearm injury

Sun, 19 Apr 2015 15:45:58 -0700

New York Mets RP Jerry Blevins (forearm) has a fractured left forearm and is out indefinitely.

Fantasy Tip: This is bad news for a Mets bullpen that was already taxed due to Jenrry Mejia's 80-game suspension. Blevins had some fantasy value because of Mejia's absence, but right now your best bet is to look elsewhere. Buddy Carlyle could save some games.

Mets | Closer role could become fluid for Mets

Wed, 08 Apr 2015 14:10:09 -0700

New York Mets RP Jeurys Familia is the front-runner to close games with RP Jenrry Mejia (elbow) headed to the disabled list, according to manager Terry Collins. However, Collins noted he may piece it together and use left-handed RP Jerry Blevins or another southpaw depending on matchups.

Fantasy Tip: Familia is a must-add arm, and for those desperate for saves, Blevins and even Buddy Carlyle -- who recorded the save in the last outing -- could be worth speculative adds. Bobby Parnell (elbow) is also working his way back and is expected to return to the closer role when healthy. All said, the Mets bullpen projects to have all the makings of a committee.

Mets | Jerry Blevins a saves option?

Tue, 07 Apr 2015 11:08:41 -0700

New York Mets RP Jerry Blevins could be a saves option for the Mets with RP Jenrry Mejia (elbow) injured. Blevins had an opponent slash line of .160/.202/.217 against left-handed hitters, and he didn't allow a home run all season to lefties. Blevins retired a left-handed hitter, Washington Nationals OF Bryce Harper, for the first out of the ninth inning Monday, April 6, before giving way to RP Buddy Carlyle.

Fantasy Tip: This is mostly speculation from's Mark Simon, but it's not out of the question if Terry Collins decides to go with matchups in the ninth with Mejia hurt. However, Mejia's absence may be short-lived, so targeting Blevins might be a mute point.

Nationals | Rafael Soriano hopes to make playoff roster

Fri, 19 Sep 2014 16:15:32 -0700

Washington Nationals RP Rafael Soriano will have his playoff fate decided in the next 10 days after RP Drew Storen has locked down the closer's role. Soriano is feeling more comfortable with his setup role and said he'd be ready for the playoffs after a few more games. Soriano preserved a four-run lead with a perfect ninth inning Thursday, Sept. 18. The team's final relief spot for the postseason will likely come down to Soriano and RPs Jerry Blevins, Xavier Cedeno and Blake Treinen. Manager Matt Williams still believes in Soriano.

Nationals | Ross Detwiler with enhanced role

Wed, 30 Jul 2014 06:20:58 -0700

Washington Nationals RP Ross Detwiler will have a bigger role in the bullpen, according to manager Matt Williams. RP Jerry Blevins will be used as more of a left-handed specialist.

Fantasy Tip: Detwiler has a 1.23 ERA with a .146 opponents' batting average this season. He could sneak into the mix if Rafael Soriano continues to struggle. However, Drew Storen is first in line in that scenario.
