The Arlington Heights Daily Herald reports Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella said five pitchers would work in the exhibition opener Thursday, March 4. SP Randy Wells will begin, followed by RPs Sean Marshall, J.R. Mathes, Mike Parisi and Esmailin Caridad.

Carrie Muskat, of MLB.com, reports Chicago Cubs RP Angel Guzman will not be used in the rotation with SP Ted Lilly (shoulder) out. Ps Jeff Samardzija, Tom Gorzelanny, Sean Marshall, Mike Parisi and Carlos Silva are candidates to replace Lilly in the rotation.

MLB.com's Robert Emrich reports St. Louis Cardinals SP Mike Parisi allowed a run on three hits over five innings in his final Arizona Fall League start Monday, Nov. 16. Parisi developed a cutter that he throws in fastball counts to keep hitters off balance.
