Michael Cunningham, of the Sun-Sentinel, reports Miami Dolphins LS Ed Perry took extensive snaps at tight end during practice Sunday, Aug. 1. Perry replaced backup TE John James (heat), who sat out practice after suffering heat-related symptoms. "It's good for me because I like being a true backup instead of just a long snapper because I know what I'm capable of doing," said Perry, who hasn't caught a pass in a regular-season game since 2000.

Updating previous reports, the Sun-Sentinel reports Miami Dolphins TE Ed Perry (knee) tore the anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in his left knee, which means he will miss the 2003 season, according to an unnamed source. Perry was injured covering a punt in the second quarter during the Friday, August 8 pre-season game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His knee buckled as he stepped from the dirt of the baseball infield onto the grass at Pro Player Stadium, leaving a sizable divot in the turf.

The Sun-Sentinel reports the Miami Dolphins are looking for a new long snapper due to the injury suffered to Dolphins TE Ed Perry (knee) during the Friday, August 8 pre-season game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Dolphins head coach Dave Wannstedt said the team already was looking for a replacement for Perry, whom he considers among the best in the league. "You would kind of like to get a guy who can do a little bit more than long snap, [and] that is where it becomes a problem," Wannstedt said. "That is easier said than done."

According to the team's official site, the Miami Dolphins have signed free agent WR James McKnight to a five-year contract. They also re-signed TE Ed Perry to a three-year contract. Perry played in nine games for Miami last year, all in a reserve role. He also served as the long snapper on both punts and placements. McKnight was Dallas’ leading receiver in 2000 as he tallied a career-high 52 receptions for 926 yards and two touchdowns.

As an update to earlier stories, the New York Jets seeking depth at the TE position visited with four candidates yesterday. The Jets met with free agent TEs Jason Dunn (Chiefs), Ed Perry (Dolphins), Walter Rasby (Lions) and Scott Slutzker (Saints). Slutzker, at this point, seems to be their preference. Separately, the Star Ledger reports the Jets are also scheduled to meet with free agent CB Ray Hill (Bills) next week.

The NY Daily News reports Jets free agent DT Jason Ferguson's visit to Cincinnati has been canceled after the Bengals signed DT Tony Williams yesterday. As previously reported, the Jets will visit with two free agent TEs this week, Ed Perry (Dolphins) and Jason Dunn (Chiefs). Perry also is a long snapper, a need for the Jets.

According to Alex Marvez of the Sun Sentinel, agent Drew Rosenhaus said that Dolphins free agent LB and special teams ace Larry Izzo was close to signing a multi-year contract with the New England Patriots. Izzo wants to stay in Miami, but Rosenhaus said New England wants him too. They expect to have the situation resolved in the next day or two. Dolphins free agent TE/long snapper Ed Perry had to cancel a visit Monday with the Jets, due to bad weather. Perry now plans to fly to New York later this week.

According to Alex Marvez of the Sun Sentinel, in addition to the previously reported visit of free agent WR Matthew Hatchette (Vikings), the team has visits planned for WR Dedric Ward (Jets) and S Mike Logan (Jaguars), sometime next week. The Rams have expressed an interest in Dolphins free agent CB Terrance Shaw. Contract negotiations won't start until later in free agency, probably when the Rams clear some cap space. Miami free agent TE/long snapper Ed Perry failed to land a new contract with Miami yet and he has received "feelers" from Baltimore and Arizona. Agent Drew Roenhaus, who represents many Dolphins players, now represents Titans DE Jevon Kearse, who formerly was represented by Leigh Steinberg.
