Astros | Jed Lowrie has day off Monday

Mon, 24 Aug 2015 13:08:27 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Jed Lowrie is not in the starting lineup Monday, Aug. 24. 3B Luis Valbuena is starting at third base and hitting seventh, while 1B Chris Carter draws into the lineup at first base and is hitting eighth against New York Yankees SP Nathan Eovaldi.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) and Carter ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) both have plenty of power to spare but struggle to make contact and have been major headaches for their fantasy owners because of crippling batting averages. Valbuena is the better value on FantasyScore, but beware of both if you choose to go that route. They are both boom or bust commodities.

Astros | Luis Valbuena not in the lineup

Sun, 23 Aug 2015 10:35:48 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Luis Valbuena is not in the starting lineup against Los Angeles Dodgers SP Clayton Kershaw Sunday, Aug. 23. 1B Chris Carter will start at first base and is batting seventh in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) has struggled against left-handed pitchers, so he is sitting out. Carter ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) is hitting only .182 this season and is not a great option against a tough pitcher.

Astros | Chris Carter becoming afterthought

Wed, 19 Aug 2015 16:53:10 -0700

Houston Astros 1B Chris Carter is 6-for-58 (.103) with two home runs and nine RBI in 25 games since July 5, and his slugging percentage is just .224 over that time.

Fantasy Tip: It's gotten so bad for Carter ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) this year that Luis Valbuena, who is hitting only .210 on the season, is starting over him basically every day at first base. Carter should only be owned as depth in AL-only leagues at this point, and he's not a viable commodity at FantasyScore.

Astros | Luis Valbuena will not start

Sun, 16 Aug 2015 10:30:23 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Luis Valbuena is not in the starting lineup against Detroit Tigers SP Matt Boyd Sunday, Aug. 16. 1B Chris Carter will start at first base and is batting seventh in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) probably is sitting out because the team is facing a left-handed pitcher. Carter ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) is hitting only .176 this month but does have four RBI during that span. Owners may want to look for other options to use at the position.

Astros | Chris Carter out again

Sat, 15 Aug 2015 14:35:36 -0700

Houston Astros 1B Chris Carter is out of the lineup Saturday, Aug. 15, for the third straight game. 1B Luis Valbuena is hitting eighth against Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander.

Fantasy Tip: Carter ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) has been pinched by Valbuena, Colby Rasmus and Evan Gattis all playing well. Valbuena ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) has a .333-2-3 line this month but has hit just .105 against Verlander in 19 at-bats. In fairness, this is a different Verlander and Valbuena is a solid low-end play on FantasyScore.

Astros | Chris Carter appears in consecutive games

Mon, 10 Aug 2015 04:49:19 -0700

Houston Astros 1B Chris Carter played in both games of the Oakland Athletics series over the weekend, mainly because manager A.J. Hinch liked the way he hit the ball in the first game.

Fantasy Tip: Carter ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) has been plain awful at times this season, as the team has finally shown some hesitance to play him with a .180 average. Keep him off your lineup until he has turned the corner a bit more.

Astros | Chris Carter playing Saturday

Sat, 08 Aug 2015 10:57:54 -0700

Houston Astros 1B Chris Carter is back in the starting lineup against Oakland Athletics SP Jesse Chavez Saturday, Aug. 8, batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Carter ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) is just 3-for-25 since the All-Star break with two home runs and six RBIs. He's an inexpensive source of power but he is far too inconsistent to trust in FantasyScore.

Astros | Chris Carter continues to sit

Thu, 06 Aug 2015 16:10:39 -0700

Houston Astros 1B Chris Carter continues to sit on the bench Thursday, Aug. 6, against the Oakland Athletics and RHP Aaron Brooks.

Fantasy Tip: Carter ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) has just two home runs and a .130 batting average through 28 plate appearances in the second-half of the season. Carter is carrying far too much risk for both the Astros and FantasyScore owners alike.

Astros | Chris Carter sitting again

Tue, 04 Aug 2015 16:09:17 -0700

Houston Astros 1B Chris Carter is out of the starting lineup for the second straight day Tuesday, Aug. 4. SS Marwin Gonzalez is starting at first base and hitting eighth against Texas Rangers SP Yovani Gallardo.

Fantasy Tip: Carter has been the odd-man out of the lineup since Carlos Gomez arrived in town. He still has plenty of power, but with less consistent at-bats, it's even tougher to count on him in your mixed league lineups. Gonzalez ($2,800, 5.6% of cap) is facing a pitcher struggling mightily of late, but his lack of offensive upside makes him nothing more than a deep sleeper pick on FantasyScore.

Astros | Luis Valbuena starts at first base

Mon, 03 Aug 2015 14:00:13 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Luis Valbuena is starting at first base and batting eighth against Texas Rangers SP Colby Lewis Monday, Aug. 3. 1B Chris Carter is not in the starting lineup Monday.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) has gone 94 plate appearances without hitting a home run, and he has just eight runs, five doubles, five RBI and a .614 OPS over the 23-game stretch. He is a risky FantasyScore play Monday, albeit one with upside. Carter ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) is currently 3-for-40 at the dish with two of the hits being of the home run variety. Similar to Valbuena, Carter is a hit-or-miss daily option. Each projects to lose fantasy value if they enter into a platoon at first base, which is a legitimate possibility.
