Nationals | Gio Gonzalez has bullpen fail him

Tue, 26 Jul 2016 19:46:17 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Gio Gonzalez allowed three runs - two earned - and five hits with two walks and four strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings in a no-decision Tuesday, July 26, against the Cleveland Indians.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez was in line for the victory until his bullpen let him down. Gonzalez has slowly pared down his ERA from 4.81 to 4.44 in the month of July, posting three quality starts in four outings in the month. He has re-emerged as a must-start fantasy option across most formats.

Nationals | Gio Gonzalez strong in win

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 23:25:30 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Gio Gonzalez allowed one run on three hits and struck out six in six innings of work Wednesday, July 20, in an 8-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Gonzalez improved to 6-8 overall.

Fantasy Tip: Manager Dusty Baker said Gonzalez was wild, but the run support saved him. Gonzalez has had a disappointing year, but he appears to be rounding into form. Still, analyze the matchups before starting Gonzalez in daily leagues because he's still not quite to form yet.

Nationals | Gio Gonzalez regains touch

Sun, 10 Jul 2016 13:34:21 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Gio Gonzalez pitched into the sixth inning and ended up with a win Sunday, July 10, as the Nationals beat the New York Mets, 3-2. Gonzalez improved to 5-8 overall.

Fantasy Tip: It's been a rough year for Gonzalez, who started out 3-1 only to go 1-7 in his next eight starts. Gonzalez is 8-1 at Citi Field, so needless to say he's worth starting at that park. Overall, you may want to wait until Gonzalez strings a couple more wins together before using him on a regular basis.

Nationals | Gio Gonzalez struggles with control again

Tue, 05 Jul 2016 21:15:21 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Gio Gonzalez posted his first quality start in four outings Tuesday, July 05, against the Washington Nationals, but the left-hander allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks across six frames to lose for the seventh time in his last eight decisions.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez's 3-1 record and 1.86 in mid-May seems so long ago. He is still striking out more than a batter per inning, but walks have been a big issue for him during his slide, with at least three in four of his last five turns. Considering he is on a Washington team that is leading the NL East by four games, Gonzalez's 4-8 mark and 4.79 ERA heading into his final start before the break is a huge disappointment. He needs to remain on rosters, but owners should consider benching him until he can cut down on the free passes.

Nationals | Short outing for Gio Gonzalez

Sat, 25 Jun 2016 17:30:28 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Gio Gonzalez pitched a season-low three innings in his sixth straight loss, allowing six runs on six hits while walking one and striking out five against the Milwaukee Brewers Saturday, June 25.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez has been shelled on a routine basis recently. His solid strikeout numbers make him worth holding on to in NL-only formats, but feel free to hunt for better options in mixed leagues.

Padres | Yangervis Solarte starting Sunday

Sun, 19 Jun 2016 12:34:05 -0700

San Diego Padres 2B/3B Yangervis Solarte will play third base and bat fourth against Washington Nationals SP Gio Gonzalez on Sunday, June 19. INF Adam Rosales will draw a start in place of 2B/3B Ryan Schimpf at second base and hit eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Solarte has cooled considerably since coming off the disabled list in late May and is mired in a 2-for-29 slump over his last 10 games. There is some hope he could break out of that today given he is batting .333 against southpaws this season, but he's going to be a hard sell against Gonzalez. Outside of NL-only or the deepest mixed leagues, feel free to sit both Solarte and Rosales.

Nationals | Gio Gonzalez fans nine

Tue, 14 Jun 2016 19:52:51 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Gio Gonzalez yielded three runs on five hits and a season-high tying four walks while striking out nine en route to a no-decision against the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday, June 14.

Fantasy Tip: Owners likely knew Gonzalez cannot continue his torrid start (3-1, 1.86 ERA through his first eight starts), but it has been a rough go for him since (0-4, 7.45). On the plus side, his strikeout numbers have picked up a bit during his rough stretch; he has fanned at least eight in each of his last three outings after only doing so twice previously. Gonzalez stand a good chance of ending his five-start winless streak against the San Diego Padres on Sunday, however, so keep him active.

Nationals | Gio Gonzalez whiffs 10 in loss Thursday

Thu, 09 Jun 2016 19:39:27 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Gio Gonzalez (3-5) allowed three runs on five hits over seven innings in a loss to the Chicago White Sox Thursday, June 9, with two walks and 10 strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: The 30-year-old Gonzalez is averaging a strikeout per inning through 71 frames this year but has dropped four consecutive decisions. He should be viewed as a risky play for his next outing versus the Chicago Cubs Tuesday, June 14.

Cardinals | Kolten Wong out of Saturday lineup

Sat, 28 May 2016 15:38:20 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong is not in the lineup Saturday, May 28, against the Washington Nationals. 2B Jedd Gyorko will start and bat seventh against Nationals SP Gio Gonzalez.

Fantasy Tip: Wong gets the night off because of the lefty vs. lefty matchup. Although Gyorko has decent numbers in the past week and on the road, his numbers against the Nationals suggest you may be better off leaving Gyorko on the bench for the night.
