Jim Wyatt, of the Tennessean, reports the Tennessee Titans have agreed to terms with free agent S Arturo Freeman (Packers). He is expected to add depth and be a key contributor on special teams this fall. Agent Drew Rosenhaus said last night Freeman had other options around the NFL but decided to sign with the Titans.

Pete Dougherty, of PackersNews.com, reports Green Bay Packers S Arturo Freeman is leading the battle to start at strong safety heading into training camp. Freeman played in defensive coordinator Jim Bates' defensive system in Miami the last five years and clearly was the most comfortable and in command at safety during the Packers' minicamps. He started 25 games the past three seasons. Rookie S Marviel Underwood is working primarily at strong safety and he will be battling for the starting job along with veteran safeties Todd Franz and Earl Little.

Rob Demovsky, of PackersNews.com, reports Green Bay Packers newly signed S Arturo Freeman has the potential to become one of the team's starting safeties next season, but he still has some work to do. "He's not a written-in starter," defensive coordinator Jim Bates said. "He has to improve in some areas to be a starter for us. He has played some good football, and I've won a lot of games with Arturo. He just needs to get more consistent." Freeman spent the past five years playing for Bates while with the Miami Dolphins.

Alex Marvez, of the Sun-Sentinel, reports the Miami Dolphins are expected to clear about $8.5 million in cap space for 2005, once they guarantee a $5 million roster bonus to WR Chris Chambers. If Chambers' 2005 base salary stays at $1.35 million, the guaranteed bonus would lower Chambers' cap number from $7.35 million to $3.35 million. With Chambers' bonus and the recent releases of FS Arturo Freeman and DE Jay Williams, the Dolphins will have cleared $8.5 million for 2005.

Alex Marvez, of the Sun Sentinel, reports the Miami Dolphins have informed FS Arturo Freeman they will not retain him at his projected 2005 salary. Freeman was expected to earn $3 million in base salary along with a $300,000 roster bonus. If the team releases him by March 2, it will save roughly $3.2 million in cap space. Freeman's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, declined comment on the matter.

Michael Cunningham, of the Sun-Sentinel, reports Miami Dolphins head coach Dave Wannstedt said he didn't plan to meet with Dolphins S Arturo Freeman after the team turned down his agent's request to trade Freeman due to a lack of playing time. "There is nothing to meet about," Wannstedt said. "He knows I think he is doing a good job. I told him that. There really is not a story. "There is really nothing to talk about, as far as I am concerned." Freeman has said he didn't ask for a trade himself, but on Wednesday, Aug. 20 he didn't take issue with agent Drew Rosenhaus' comments that the Dolphins should let him go.

Alex Marvez, of the Sun-Sentinel, reports Miami Dolphins SS Arturo Freeman's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, approached the team on Monday, Aug. 18 about trading Freeman, who lost his starting position to Dolphins SS Sammy Knight early in the pre-season. Rosenhaus said he was denied permission to seek a deal. "It's pretty simple," Rosenhaus said. "He's not in on any of the defensive packages, and he's too good to be sitting on the bench." Dolphins head coach Dave Wannstedt said Tuesday, Aug. 19 he doesn't want to lose a player who can start at either safety even though it appears FS Shawn Wooden has moved ahead of Freeman in the pass-defense packages. Freeman, who said Tuesday morning that he had not asked for any trade himself, started all 16 games last season. Rosenhaus said Freeman plans to meet with Wannstedt on Wednesday, Aug. 20.
