Freeman played in defensive coordinator Jim Bates' defensive system in Miami the last five years and clearly was the most comfortable and in command at safety during the Packers' minicamps. He started 25 games the past three seasons. Rookie S Marviel Underwood is working primarily at strong safety and he will be battling for the starting job along with veteran safeties Todd Franz and Earl Little.

"He's not a written-in starter," defensive coordinator Jim Bates said. "He has to improve in some areas to be a starter for us. He has played some good football, and I've won a lot of games with Arturo. He just needs to get more consistent." Freeman spent the past five years playing for Bates while with the Miami Dolphins.

Alex Marvez, of the Sun-Sentinel, reports the Miami Dolphins are expected to clear about $8.5 million in cap space for 2005, once they guarantee a $5 million roster bonus to WR Chris Chambers. If Chambers' 2005 base salary stays at $1.35 million, the guaranteed bonus would lower Chambers' cap number from $7.35 million to $3.35 million. With Chambers' bonus and the recent releases of FS Arturo Freeman and DE Jay Williams, the Dolphins will have cleared $8.5 million for 2005.

"There is nothing to meet about," Wannstedt said. "He knows I think he is doing a good job. I told him that. There really is not a story. "There is really nothing to talk about, as far as I am concerned." Alex Marvez, of the Sun-Sentinel, reports Miami Dolphins SS Arturo Freeman's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, approached the team on Monday, Aug. 18 about trading Freeman, who lost his starting position to Dolphins SS Sammy Knight early in the pre-season. Rosenhaus said he was denied permission to seek a deal. "It's pretty simple," Rosenhaus said. "He's not in on any of the defensive packages, and he's too good to be sitting on the bench." Dolphins head coach Dave Wannstedt said Tuesday, Aug. 19 he doesn't want to lose a player who can start at either safety even though it appears FS Shawn Wooden has moved ahead of Freeman in the pass-defense packages. Freeman, who said Tuesday morning that he had not asked for any trade himself, started all 16 games last season. Rosenhaus said Freeman plans to meet with Wannstedt on Wednesday, Aug. 20.
