Rays | Jake McGee could return this season

Fri, 21 Aug 2015 17:05:24 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash is optimistic that RP Jake McGee (knee) can return to action before the end of the regular season. He said there was nothing that came out of the surgery indicating that he would be sidelined for the rest of the year.

Fantasy Tip: McGee underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his knee Friday, Aug. 21, and he was initially expected to miss six to eight weeks. He was 1-2 with a 2.57 ERA and six saves in 36 games prior to getting injured.

Rays | Jake McGee has torn meniscus

Fri, 21 Aug 2015 09:01:18 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays RP Jake McGee (knee) will have surgery to fix a torn meniscus in his knee Friday, Aug. 21. He could miss the rest of the season, as he's expected to miss six to eight weeks. The regular season ends October 4. McGee was put on the 15-day disabled list, and RP Enny Romero was recalled from Class AAA Durham in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: With McGee likely done for the year, that gives Brad Boxberger, who has two blown saves and has allowed three earned runs in his last 4 1/3 innings, more rope in the closer's role. Boxberger has 29 saves on the season.

Rays | Jake McGee out 6-8 weeks

Thu, 20 Aug 2015 15:58:46 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays RP Jake McGee (knee) will have knee surgery that will keep him sidelined for six to eight weeks.

Fantasy Tip: That will effectively end McGee's 2015 season. You can drop him in all single-year formats. Brad Boxberger, despite his recent struggles, remains the ninth-inning stopper for now. If you're speculating on a replacement in case his struggles continue, Steven Geltz is your best bet.

Rays | Tampa to go with matchups in ninth

Thu, 20 Aug 2015 15:37:24 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash said he will play the matchups with both RPs Brad Boxberger and Jake McGee (knee) out Thursday, Aug. 20. RPs Alex Colome, Steven Geltz, Xavier Cedeno or Brandon Gomes could all pitch either the eighth or ninth innings.

Fantasy Tip: McGee is having surgery and is likely done for the rest of this year, which gives Boxberger more rope as the team's closer. Boxberger has struggled of late. If you're speculating, Geltz may be your best bet in deeper leagues in case Tampa goes in another direction.

Rays | Jake McGee has tweaked knee

Wed, 19 Aug 2015 15:13:19 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays RP Jake McGee (knee) tweaked his knee on the second to last pitch Tuesday, Aug. 18, according to manager Kevin Cash.

Fantasy Tip: McGee has mainly been serving as a late-inning setup man to Brad Boxberger, but he does have six saves on the season, and he can fill in in the ninth if Boxberger needs to be rested. The Rays will know more on the severity of McGee's injury tomorrow. He should be owned in all deep mixed and AL-only leagues for the occasional save chance.

Rays | Tampa relievers available

Fri, 24 Jul 2015 05:34:57 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays RP Brad Boxberger, RP Jake McGee and RP Kevin Jepsen are believed to be available for trade.

Fantasy Tip: If Boxberger is dealt, McGee would likely regain his closer status. Keep an eye on the situation.

Rays | Jake McGee shuts door in the ninth

Sat, 13 Jun 2015 05:31:15 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays RP Jake McGee struck out two batters without allowing a base runner to record his second save of the season during the Rays' 7-5 win over the Chicago White Sox Friday, June 12.

Fantasy Tip: McGee was roughed up for four runs -- three earned -- Tuesday, May 26, but hasn't surrendered a run in any of his other 10 appearances, and he has a 14.4 K/9 for the season. With Brad Boxberger's last save coming Sunday, May 31, and McGee closing out the past two games for Tampa Bay, it appears McGee may have the inside edge on ninth-inning opportunities. Continue to monitor the bullpen usage, as currently, both McGee and Boxberger should be owned in all seasonal leagues.

Rays | Closer committee likely for Tampa Bay

Fri, 15 May 2015 15:34:32 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays RPs Jake McGee (elbow) and Brad Boxberger will be used based on matchups and will both likely receive save opportunities, according to manager Kevin Cash.

Fantasy Tip: This is obviously a little bit of a blow to Boxberger's fantasy stock, but it was expected that McGee would rejoin to the closer mix when he returned. Both relievers should be owned in all formats, as they can help fantasy owners without earning every save for the Rays.

Rays | Jake McGee won't pitch consecutive days

Fri, 15 May 2015 14:30:43 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays RP Jake McGee (elbow) said he will be eased back into the bullpen mix, and he will not pitch in consecutive days initially. He also noted he is open to whatever role he settles in.

Fantasy Tip: Fantasy owners who've patiently stashed McGee are hoping he'll settle back into the ninth-inning role. However, with Brad Boxberger dominating in McGee's absence, it appears a committee is the best-case scenario for McGee early on. Boxberger has 10 saves with a 1.29 ERA, a 0.93 WHIP and a 12.9 K/9, after all.

Rays | Jake McGee with no set role

Fri, 15 May 2015 07:22:02 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays RP Jake McGee (elbow) doesn't have a set role when he returns from the disabled list, according to manager Kevin Cash. "I don't anticipate anybody assuming any role," Cash said.

Fantasy Tip: Brad Boxberger has been too good to remove from the role for someone that doesn't have a long run of excellence at closer. McGee should fill in once in a while, but it's hard to see Boxberger taking much of a hit.
