Joe Schad, of the Palm Beach Post, reports free agent RB Robert Edwards (Dolphins), who sat out last season after being cut by the Miami Dolphins prior to the 2004 regular season opener, called Dolphins general manager Rick Spielman on Monday, July 26, and asked for an opportunity to come back. Prior to joining the Dolphins last season, Edwards, a former Pro Bowler, missed two seasons after a knee injury playing beach flag football. "Why I wasn't picked up last season is still a mystery to me," the 29-year-old Edwards said. "Everybody wants to ask about my knee. They can't get past the knee. The knee is fine. I can play. I showed that last year in the preseason. I don't want a handout; just give me a fair shot to compete."

Miami Dolphins head coach Dave Wannstedt announced the team might decide to hold on to RBs Robert Edwards and Leonard Henry this year due to their impressive performances throughout pre-season. Henry and Edwards had been competing for one roster spot this off-season. "I thought they both played well. I'd like to keep them both," Wannstedt said. "We just may end up doing that."

Michael Cunningham, of the Sun-Sentinel, reports Miami Dolphins head coach Dave Wannstedt said Wednesday, Aug. 20 that the Dolphins could keep an extra running back because RBs Robert Edwards and Leonard Henry both have played well. That would mean carrying five running backs if WR Charlie Rogers, who is expected to have a role on offense, is included.

The Miami Herald reports the Miami Dolphins are expected to shop either RBs Robert Edwards or Leonard Henry in return for draft picks. The Dolphins don't plan to keep five running backs, meaning either Henry or Edwards will not make the team if everyone remains healthy. Because the Dolphins believe both have value, they will try to exact a draft pick for one rather than cut him.

Bob Emanuel Jr., of the Miami Herald, reports Miami Dolphins RB Robert Edwards is one of two running backs vying for one roster spot. Dolphins head coach Dave Wannstedt said Sunday, Aug. 17 the team will ''probably not'' carry four running backs this season, meaning one reserve will be cut. Dolphins RB Ricky Williams is the starter, while RB Travis Minor is the established backup.

"He (Henry) was one of the few guys who looked like he had some burst," said Dolphins head coach Dave Wannstedt.

Miami Dolphins senior vice president of football operations Rick Spielman confirmed the team is going to tender exclusive rights free agent RB Robert Edwards. “We think he is even going to get better because that was his first year playing after being out for so long. We think he’s going to have a legitimate to even take the next step and be even closer to what he was,” Spielman said Saturday. “I think it’ll be a competition (between Edwards and Travis Minor for the No. 2 role).”

Alex Marvez reports for the Florida Sun-Sentinel Miami Dolphins RB Robert Edwards hopes to improve even more next year after finishing second for the 2002 NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award. "I think I will definitely have more speed and power going into this season seeing how my body is back in football shape," said Edwards. "I should be more of a weapon. I feel like I will be a better player than last year, but it depends on how I'm used." He is expected to compete with RB Travis Minor and 2002 seventh-round draft pick Leonard Henry for playing time behind RB Ricky Williams. "I think he's got tremendous upside," said running backs coach Joel Collier. "He was the 17th pick in the draft in 1998, and there was a reason for that. I thought he was a heck of a back coming out, and I still think he's a heck of a back."

Edwards has expressed interest in going to another team in hopes of receiving more playing time, but as an exclusive rights free agent he cannot test the market unless the Dolphins refuse to tender a contract.

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Tommy Maddox has been named The Associated Press NFL Comeback Player of the Year. He easily beat Miami RB Robert Edwards. Maddox earned 24 votes from a panel of 48 sports writers and broadcasters who cover the NFL. Edwards was second with 14 votes.

Edwards said Thursday he would prefer a situation where he can compete for a starting job. Edwards was reluctant to discuss his future beyond saying he will "weigh his options" at the end of the year.

The team gave Edwards one of their game balls for his production. Edwards suffered a severe knee injury in February of 1999 and hadn’t played since then.

The Ap reports Miami Dolphins backup RB Robert Edwards had a nice showing Saturday night as he bids for a roster spot. Edwards ran for 43 yards in 11 attempts and scored on a 1-yard run. More importantly, Edwards' only complaint in the training room Sunday was typical day-after-the-game soreness, coach Dave Wannstedt said. "That was encouraging,'' Wannstedt said. "He ran with some bursts, and he's a stronger runner than you give him credit for."

Chris Perkins reports for the Sun Sentinel it appears RBs Robert Edwards and rookie Leonard Henry are battling for the last roster spot at RB for the Miami Dolphins. To this point, Edwards has gotten the opportunities to show what he can do. "Well, he hasn't had as much action as what we would have liked because of the running back depth," coach Dave Wannstedt said of Henry. The rookie is expected to get more action the last two weeks of the pre-season.

The Edmonton Sun is reporting CFL RB Ronald Williams was not signed by the Miami Dolphins as he had hoped for. The interesting part of the story is Williams said he was not signed because the Dolphins signed ex-Patriots RB Robert Edwards instead.

Alex Marvez reports for the Sun Sentinel reports former New England Patriots RB Robert Edwards worked out for the Miami Dolphins. If signed, Edwards would not be eligible to join the team for the playoffs. "He's been working out with a speed [coach] in New Orleans," said Allan Wade, Edwards' agent. "I think he looks good. Most teams are kind of gun-shy about taking him, but these workouts are promising."

Updating an earlier story, Michael Felger reports for the Boston Herald the New England Patriots reached an injury settlement with RB Robert Edwards before putting him on waviers today. The injury settlement dealt with Edwards' strained groin, not his surgically repaired knee. Edwards tweaked the groin the second day of practice July 24 and was unable to fully return to the practice field. Terms of the injury settlement were not released, but it was believed to be no more than $200,000. Edwards' cap number was scheduled to be $1.23 million in 2001, but after factoring in the settlement and an accelerated signing bonus proration, that number will jump to around $1.5 million.

"This in no way detracts from the remarkable accomplishments Robert has achieved through two years of dedication and commitment," said Coach Bill Belichick. Patriots | Not Looking Good For Edwards

The Boston Globe reports New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said there was less than a 50 percent chance RB Robert Edwards would play against Tampa Bay. Edwards didn't practice for the second straight week and is still recovering from a groin pull. Belichick indicated he would not place Edwards on the physically unable to perform list, which would have bought him an additional six weeks into the season to get back to full strength.
