Chargers | Unlikely to pursue Ricky Williams

Updating a previous item, retired RB Ricky Williams said that he would consider coming out of retirement to play for his hometown San Diego Chargers. The Chargers, however, have not pursued Williams. It is also unlikely that general manager A.J. Smith would give up a draft pick to the Baltimore Ravens, who own the rights to Williams.

Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Cam Cameron said Tuesday, Aug. 23, that the plan for now is to allow RB Ray Rice to keep running until he gets tired. When that happens, he's supposed to let Cameron know and RB Ricky Williams will come in. "We will leave a lot of it up to (Ray) and we will be smart too because we want Ray full speed at the end of games," Cameron said.

Miami Dolphins RB Ricky Williams said he is looking forward to free agency because it is something he has been waiting for, he said, recently, since 1999 and he's anxious to find which teams might suit him, and vice versa, on the open market. However, Williams added he would still like to remain in Miami. "I mean, really, I have no idea. I feel like I'm in a good position. I feel like if I stay here, it'll be good for me, it'll be good for my family," Williams said. "I feel like if I go somewhere else, it'll be good it'll be good for my family. So you know, I think in my position I think the extended off-season has been good for me because I've been waiting since 1999 to be a free agent. So it's been nice to enjoy these past couple months and the fun part, when we see who's offering what and what's the best situation for me, I'm looking forward to it and I think it's going to be a good experience."

Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham said he will come on the field and confront Miami Dolphins RB Ricky Williams should he throw an illegal crackback block in Week 16, according to Carlos Monarrez and Dave Birkett, of the Detroit Free Press. All I can say to Ricky Williams - I want him to know this - if he hits one of our DBs in the back on a crack block, then I'm coming on the field," Cunningham said. "I mean, he's had a couple of knockouts, but they've been nonlegal. I'll just put it as that." Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano was told about Cunningham's comments and was asked whether he has gotten complaints from other teams about Williams making crackback blocks. "No ... I don't know what you're talking about," Sparano said. Lions coaches have told their defensive backs to watch for crackback blocks.

Miami Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano said during his press conference that he is concerned that RB Ricky Williams has fumbled four times in the last two weeks, losing two of the fumbles. However, Sparano said he is concerned with any turnovers. "I am concerned with anybodies turnovers anybody's turnovers, Ricky, anybody. It doesn't really matter who it is, I am concerned about them. We address them. We try to put them in those positions in practice, those types of things. Try to make practice a little more physical in there, try to do as many drills as we can," Sparano said.
