Dolphins | Reward And Risk

Thu, 23 Aug 2001 07:26:12 -0700

The Sun Times reports Miami Dolphins personnel director Rick Spielman sees both the risks and rewards of trading for QB Cade McNown. If McNown develops he could take over as the team's franchise QB replacing Jay Fiedler. "We're getting a young, first-round quarterback for basically [salary] minimums," said Spielman on Wednesday. "The kid is very excited about coming down here. This is an ideal situation if Cade takes the opportunity. He seemed to be very humble on the phone. We're really excited about the way Jay is playing; this is no reflection on Jay." The risk with McNown is a failure to improve, or conduct the Dolphins find unacceptable. Spielman aid the team would "move on if we feel he's a detriment to the team."

Wed, 22 Aug 2001 21:12:28 -0700

Chris Perkins reports for the Sun Sentinel Miami Dolphins QB Mike Quinn will now have to compete with newly acquired QB Cade McNown for the team's No. 3 QB job. Rookie QB Josh Heupel hasn't practiced in more than a week and his future with the Dolphins doesn't seem as though it will extend past Tuesday, when rosters have to be down to 65. Earlier reports said the Dolphins might consider keeping four QBs on the roster, but coach Dave Wannstedt quickly shot that idea down. "We won't keep four quarterbacks on the 53-man [roster]," Wannstedt said.

Wed, 22 Aug 2001 12:57:29 -0700

There are several scenarios in which compensation varies, and at least one of them includes a conditional choice or choices in the 2003 draft. "It's a good deal for Cade because it's a fresh start in a place where he doesn't bring any of the baggage people perceived him to have in Chicago," agent Tom Condon said.
